We'll see what's never been shown before

With permission from all ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-offs, this is HBO’s most anticipated series of the coming months.

The new ‘Harry Potter’ series is expected to be one of HBO’s most important projects for the next few years, with a release date of 2027 (although “between 2026 and 2027” is a possibility). Over the next decade, the plan is to adapt the books at a rate of one season per book, though the exact plan has not been revealed beyond the fact that filming begins next summer in Leavesden.

We attended HBO’s London event where CEO Casey Bloys revealed the first details of some of its most anticipated 2025 premieres, and he left the series presentation for the end. Above the new ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off, the prequel of ‘It’, and even the biopic of Chespirito, which was my biggest surprise among this batch of announcements. The Harry Potter series’ new details have eclipsed everything else.

The number of children who applied to be the main trio’s protagonists was the most impressive: 32,000. The showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod say they review 500 to 1,000 auditions a day to choose the finalist. A second meeting with a selection of them will continue the elimination process in January.

Gardiner and Mylod’s intentions regarding book and film faithfulness have also been revealed. Both have declared themselves fans of the franchise, especially Gardiner, who says he read the books at 14 and that his family lovesv them. Because no one wanted to wait for anyone else to finish the story, he said, every family member had a copy so they could all enjoy it.

Both have called adapting each book in just over two hours a “real feat,” but they are lucky not to have that time limit, which will benefit the audience. “We have a much larger space to play in,” Mylod: “we can explore Hogwarts, we will see things that have never been seen before.”

Both state that “we don’t want to belittle what’s been done before,” but “expand it.” Hogwarts will be less imaginative but more realistic than in the films. It will be built with a more naturalistic intention, including Georgian architecture, to feel like a real place. They say “we have 8 hours to tell the first book, so we can dive into its depths” to contrast the magical world with the Muggles.

Finally, HBO is sticking to the canonical ages of the characters, such as Severus Snape, who will be in his 30s, and James and Lily Potter, who will be much younger than in previous adaptations, having died at 21. Fans will love this. Traditional British character actors will play adult roles, according to rumors.

HBO’s next big project is Harry Potter. Although few details are available, the idea of adapting a JK Rowling book per season provides a sense of its scope. Now it must face JK Rowling, the inevitable elephant in the room.

New Harry Potter. Harry Potter was already planned for a series in 2021, but it wasn’t until ‘Hogwart’s Legacy’ was a hit that it took shape. The cast, especially the young wizard protagonists, is still undefined, and HBO now expects the series to premiere in 2026 or 2027, instead of 2025.

JK Rowling issue. The presence of JK Rowling, author of the original books, who has publicly positioned herself as a trans-exclusionary activist since June 2020, complicates HBO’s seemingly unanimously positive response to this issue. Famous actors like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Eddie Redmayne have been rejected due to this attitude.

Position of Warner. Rowling’s first statements—especially that only “people who menstruate” can be considered women, despite her previous Twitter fights—sparked so much controversy that Warner had to issue a statement. Rowling was not mentioned, but the goal was clear: “a diverse and inclusive culture has never been more important to our company and around the world” and “Warner’s position on inclusivity” was “firmly established“.

Warner’s new stance. Warner has had to retract its statement because Rowling still owns Harry Potter and has been involved in the new series’ development. HBO head Casey Bloys says Rowling has been “very, very involved in the process of selecting a writer and director” for the series and that her anti-trans stance “has not affected the casting or hiring of writers or production team.” He concludes: “JK Rowling has the right to express her personal views.”
