US fears “new atrocities” against Rohingya in Burma

As a result of the recent increase in violence in Rakhine State, which is located in the western region of Burma and has been plagued by ethnic and political turmoil for the past three years, the United States expressed its concern on Tuesday that “new atrocities” were taking place in Burma, with a special focus on the Rohingya. Since the Arakan Army (AA, Arakan being the old name of Rakhine) attacked security troops in November, a truce that had been mostly respected since the junta takeover in 2021 has been broken. The United States Department of State issued a statement in which it said, “The acts of genocide and other crimes against humanity committed by the military against the Rohingya, as well as the intercommunal tensions it has stoked in Rakhine State and elsewhere in the country, highlight the serious dangers to which civilians are exposed.” The United States Department of State noted, “The current surge in intercommunal violence and tensions also increases the risks of further atrocities.” The department also called on “the Burmese military, as well as all armed actors, to protect civilian populations and enable unhindered humanitarian access.”

Army-led efforts to inflame tensions up the region

Already on Sunday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a warning about the occurrence of new “atrocities” in the state of Rakhine. “With intercommunal tensions between the Rakhine and Rohingya ethnic groups high – and actively stoked by the military – this is a critical period when the risk of further atrocity crimes is particularly high,” according to Volker Türk, in a news statement issued today.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights had previously expressed his “deeply alarmed” response to the rise of violence in Rakhine on Sunday, and he had warned of the possibility of additional atrocities occurring from this situation.

Volker Turk stated that he was “deeply alarmed by reports of escalating violence and the destruction of property in Buthidaung Township in northern Rakhine State.” According to reports, this has resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians, the majority of whom are Rohingya. Volker Turk’s services were seeking to “corroborate reports of serious violations.”

“With intercommunal tensions between the Rakhine and Rohingya communities running high – and actively stoked by the military – this is a critical moment when the risk of further atrocity crimes is particularly high,” the United Nations official stated in a press release.

The United Nations (UN) considers atrocity crimes, which include genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, to be the most heinous of all crimes that fall under the purview of international law.

In 2017, the Rohingya minority within Rakhine State was subjected to a widespread persecution that was led by the military. This persecution is being investigated by the United Nations as a possible genocide.

The state has been plagued by renewed fighting ever since the Arakan Army, a rebel group, launched an offensive on security troops in November. This attack brought an end to a ceasefire that had been in place for the most part since the junta took control in a coup in 2021.

Turk demanded that the combat be stopped, that people be protected, and that the parties involved in the conflict provide “immediate and unimpeded humanitarian access.”

A further request that he made was for the parties involved in the conflict to “completely and unreservedly respect international law, including the measures that have already been ordered by the International Court of Justice for the protection of the Rohingya.”
