Ukraine plans to tempt North Korea

Each side in the Eastern European war seems to be working behind the scenes.

Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, confirmed North Korean troops in Kursk, Russia, yesterday. The executive called the deployment a “significant escalation” of Pyongyang’s involvement in the conflict and urged Moscow and North Korea to withdraw their troops immediately. Russia withdrew part of its nuclear arsenal while Ukraine moved “between the lines.”

A show of force. Russia held a nuclear exercise amid the Eastern European conflict under President Vladimir Putin. No results were provided for the exercise, which launched ballistic missiles from the Kamchatka Peninsula, ships in the Arctic, and cruise missiles from long-range aircraft. However, the Russian Defense Ministry said all missiles hit their targets.

At a delicate time in the conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is seeking more support from his allies and pleading for the right to use long-range missiles to attack strategic Russian targets, a request that has so far gone unheeded.

Nuclear “tests.” Russia has conducted many ballistic missile tests in recent years, especially during its military expansion and Ukraine war. Such tests include launching intercontinental ballistic missiles like the Sarmat, a “superweapon” that can bypass other nations‘ defenses.

Nuclear and missile tests have been used to deter other nations from intervening and show military strength since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Nuclear modernization pledges. According to the New York Times, Putin pledged to keep the nation’s nuclear forces at a “adequate level” without starting a new arms race. Putin promised to invest in a new generation of nuclear-armed submarines, long-range bombers, and mobile missile launchers to protect the country from external threats.

Deterrence and domestic messages. Since the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian president has focused on WMDs to boost domestic morale, considering the performance of Russian troops, and to warn the West not to support Ukraine.

While the Kremlin fears a direct confrontation with Ukraine over the delivery of advanced weapons, Ukraine sees such warnings as mere threats, recalling that Russia has not responded forcefully to previous Western arms deliveries that were once considered “taboo”.

The Ukrainian “campaign.” The war continues. Insider reported that Ukraine is encouraging North Korean troops in Russia to defect while they decide whether to join the war. How? In exchange for shelter and food, its Telegram “I Want to Live” surrender platform promises “a safe and well-fed life in comfortable barracks.”

Ukraine shows images of its POW camps to North Korean troops, showing Russian defectors’ regular meals and comfortable beds. A phone number and QR code are included in the video above, making defection easy.

Allied support and geopolitics. The Ukrainian initiative may exploit soldier discontent to weaken foreign support for Russian forces in the conflict. Ukraine’s campaign suggests that Russia is increasingly dependent on allies like North Korea for troops and resources.
