Trump administration starts risky Senate hearings

Tuesday marks the start of the US Senate’s first confirmation hearings for members of Donald Trump’s administration. The process is expected to take several weeks and is likely to be difficult for some of the controversial choices, including Pete Hegseth, who was selected to head the Pentagon.

The Constitution of the United States stipulates that nominees for secretary and other high-ranking officials must be approved by the Senate following a hearing in the relevant committee.

The hearings are being held in the midst of controversy after special counsel Jack Smith said in a statement released Monday night that if the president-elect had not been re-elected four years later, he would have been found guilty of trying to rig the 2020 election. The prosecutor was swiftly referred to as “deranged” by Trump in a harsh statement on his Truth Social platform.

At 9:30 a.m., 44-year-old former major Pete Hegseth will take the Senate stage to testify before the Armed Services Committee, where he is certain to be subjected to intense criticism from the Democratic senators.

The opposition has expressed outrage over the Fox News host’s appointment as Secretary of Defence. He has been criticised for his inexperience in commanding the most potent military in the world and for making some divisive remarks, like opposing the inclusion of women in combat soldiers.

Pete Hegseth has stated that he wants to completely overhaul the Pentagon because it has become too “woke,” especially after firing certain generals and once again prohibiting transgender individuals from joining the military.

Donald Trump insisted that the former Fox News host was a “winner” and said he was sticking with his selection in early December, despite the scandal.
