Infected or zombies? People don’t care anymore: ‘Apocalypse Z’ succeeded despite doubts.

It was obvious that Prime Video would love ‘Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End’. The novel by Manel Loureiro, which began as a blog post, was a hit and spawned two sequels. These Spanish zombie novels are landmarks, but their unique and addictive plots have captivated millions of readers.

Its first Amazon adaptation became Prime Video’s most-watched international original film. It was #1 in the Top 10 in the US, UK, Germany, and France in its first weekend. This led to the announcement of a sequel that will continue to explore Manel Loureiro’s universe, likely facing ‘The Dark Days’.

A strange disease like rabies spreads across the planet, turning people into extremely aggressive creatures in ‘The Beginning of the End’. After losing his wife in an accident, our protagonist has spent a year depressed and alone with his cat. His sister invites him to the Canary Islands when the plague spreads, sending him on a dangerous journey with unexpected companions.

The film begins as a portrait of apocalypse life in the style of ‘I Am Legend’, then becomes episodic, making one think a serial would have worked better. This does not prevent us from seeing an interesting commitment to fantasy in Spain, whose well-deserved international recognition shows that the genre remains popular abroad.

Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End, influenced by every zombie thriller ever made and The Last of Us, is a competently crafted thriller with little ambition. The Spanish-language film follows Manel, a grieving man caught in a zombie apocalypse, for a year. Manel, who lost his wife in a car crash just before the movie opens, is barely surviving when the virus spreads. Since they survived the pandemic, everyone thinks they can handle this outbreak. However, they have no idea how terrifying things will get.

Manel initially refuses the government’s military-aided evacuation and stays home. After two months in isolation, he must act. The outbreak got out of control, and Manel’s sister left with her family for the Canary Islands. Despite losing contact with them, he decides to visit them. Apocalypse Z has structural chapters, not literal ones Like Quentin Tarantino movies.

I love zombie movies, so when I heard Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End was doing well on Prime Video, I wanted to watch it with my Amazon subscription. This was one of the most ridiculously fun movies of 2024 and a great addition to the zombie apocalypse genre.

Manel Loureiro’s Apocalipsis Z 1 inspired Carles Torrens’ Spanish zombie thriller. El principio del fin novel has everything I want in a zombie film: a compelling story about a widower trying to find his sister, heart, and gnarly zombie kills. One of the main characters is a cat. One of the best horror films I’ve seen recently does that.

The main character, Manel (Francisco Ortiz), finally agrees to leave Spain and join his sister in the Canary Islands to escape the TSJ virus early in Apocalypse Z. As he boards his plane with his cat, Lúculo, chaos ensues, causing panic at the airport.

I love the pacing of this sequence as it goes from a normal day at the airport with people waiting to board their flight to panic as the ticket booths stop working, cancellations appear on the monitors, and emergency messages start going off on phones. Absolute madness.

This intense and action-packed sequence has no visible zombies, but it made me think that an airport would be the last place I would want to be during a zombie-virus panic. There’s nowhere to go, thousands of panicked people could crush you in a stampede or eat you alive (if they’re zombies), and everyone is already grumpy even on a good day without viruses.
