This Lovecraftian nightmare is one of the scariest

Junji Ito’s spiralling nightmare inspired a unique anime.

One of the most singular horror manga artists is Junji Ito. Like the genre’s great literary masters (from whom he constantly draws: Lovecraft is one of his great influences), his talent spreads out in long stories and short stories, vignettes of direct impact that leave an indelible mark on the reader with their bodily mutations and psyches that plunge into madness.

“Uzumaki,” his masterpiece, is a long story divided into more or less self-contained chapters (although there is a common thread for all of them) that tell how a peaceful Japanese town’s inhabitants are going crazy with spiral shapes, from everyday ones like cloud patterns or everyday objects to more terrifying ones like hair, insects, or even the protagonist’s friends and family’s bodies.

Junji Ito has appeared on screen in OVAs like ‘GYO’ and short story anthologies like ‘Junji Ito Collection’ (available on Crunchyroll) and ‘Junji Ito Maniac’ (available on Netflix). A previous live-action adaptation of ‘Uzumaki’ had a different visual style than the manga but was still great. The latest manga anime adaptation is the most faithful and captures the original’s obsessive atmosphere.

Despite its brief four-twenty-minute episodes, ‘Uzumaki’ (which you can watch on Max) took five years to arrive on screens, and each shot shows the care with which it was shot. The spiral effects are especially careful, using 2D, 3D, and rotoscopic effects to bring Junji Ito’s circular nightmares to life in a moving replica of the horrific manga images.

Each detail in ‘Uzumaki’ is meticulously done. The soundtrack is by Colin Stetson, a master of modern horror sound who worked on films like ‘Hereditary’ and ‘Colour Out of Space’, which are similar to ‘Uzumaki‘. Black and white as an expressive tool of unusual power, this is one of the essential horror releases of an October leading up to Halloween that promises surprises.

The horror in H.P. Lovecraft’s stories makes them timeless. Lovecraftian horror is about the existential dread humans feel when they realise the universe is bigger than they thought. It’s cosmic horror about complex, timeless entities humans can’t understand.

The larger-than-life dread of Lovecraftian horror is difficult to replicate in any medium, let alone anime. Few series attempt this, but some have come close to reminding anime fans that they are not alone and loneliness is less terrifying.

The 2022 psychological horror miniseries Housing Complex C draws from Lovecraft’s works and references them throughout. Kimi, a young girl, lives in a low-cost housing complex where terrifying events occur frequently.
