This Christmas Netflix surprise

A healthy return to simple, direct, healthy action movies.

We don’t know Netflix’s expectations for ‘Carry-On’ (a very boring Spanish title, which you can see on the platform), but we’re willing to bet they were lower than its numbers. With almost 100 million views in two weeks (both at number 1 of the most viewed English films), it almost quintuples the next production on the list, the war drama ‘Six Triple Eight’.

Its success is due to Jaume Collet-Serra’s solid direction, a Spaniard who has lived in Hollywood since his career began and has directed action and suspense films like ‘The Passenger’, ‘The Blue Heap’, and ‘Unknown’. His weakest films have been those with blockbuster budgets (‘Jungle Cruise’ and ‘Black Adam’), so it’s nice to see him back in a fast, economical, concise, and direct film.

In ‘Hand Luggage’, a couple who are expecting their first child work at different airport locations, but he is unhappy. On Christmas Eve, the most complicated day of the year, a mysterious passenger blackmails the agent into letting him take a dangerous package on the plane, threatening to kill his girlfriend with his incredible ability to monitor everything in the airport.

Although ‘Hand Luggage’ sometimes falls into annoying clichés and Taron Egerton has the charisma of a cork, the film mostly works as a powerful race against time thanks to well-defined and one-piece characters, charismatic villains, and Collet-Serra’s ability to visualize screens, conversations, devices, and technology in fresh and daring ways. Many movies can replace ‘Die Hard’, but few deliver this level of comfort.

1. Snow Society (2024)

Society of the Snow deviates from Manifest’s missing flight plot. J.A. Bayona’s Spanish thriller accurately recounts the 1972 Uruguayan plane crash. Bayona filmed at the crash site and used survivor accounts, unlike Alive (1993).

The film depicts the group’s struggles in the Andes and explores human survival. Cinematography depicts the vast, cold mountains and their isolation, while makeup shows their harsh ordeal.

Society of the Snow depicts survival against impossible odds without sensationalizing it. Watch it this Christmas for its power and emotion.

2.1 Nimona (2023)

Animation, Science Fantasy, Action | IMDB Rating: 7.5 | Runtime: 102 minutes

With its action, comedy, and satire, Nimona creates a unique atmosphere like Blade Runner, Zootopia, and Shrek. Its fast pace, stunning animation, and imaginative “Medieval Futuristic” world combining fairy tale elements with advanced technology set it apart from other animated films.

Riz Ahmed excels as Ballister Boldheart, a knight on the run after being framed for murder. Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), his mischievous partner, adds comic energy and emotional depth. They uncover a kingdom-wide plot.

Nimona’s strong voice performances and focus on identity and rebellion make it refreshing and subversive. At 1 hour and 41 minutes, it provides a satisfying viewing experience.

2. Otto (2022)

IMDB Rating: 7.5 | Runtime: 126 minutes

Remember Grinch? This improves. Based on Fredrik Backman’s novel, Tom Hanks’ heartfelt adaptation of Sweden’s A Man Called Ove invites you to love America’s grumpiest man. Otto, a widower, hides his grief behind a tight routine and gruffness.

Otto’s guarded world changes when he meets his lively new neighbours, bringing humor, heartbreak, and hope.

Marc Forster and David Magee masterfully weave flashbacks to explore Otto’s journey with humor and emotion. They celebrate Swedish heritage while exploring modern themes with warmth. Hanks and Mariana Treviño excel in their roles, bringing depth to even the most stoic characters.
