“The Secret Level,” a video game tribute series

“Secret Level” is full of video game references and characters, but some newcomers may be harder to spot.

The Amazon Prime Video animated anthology series adapts video game worlds like Pac-Man, Mega Man, “Exodus,” “Crossfire,” and “Conclave.” They’re also trying “Dungeons & Dragons” and “Warhammer 40,000.”

All these franchises are in “Secret Level”’s first season.

Keanu Reeves stars in “Armored Core” short. The game pits mechs against each other for corporate control of the world. The “Elden Ring” and “Dark Souls” developers released their latest game in 2023.

“Concord” is odd to be in “Secret Level.” With a $200 million budget, Playstation clearly believed in this hero shooter like “Overwatch”. The game failed and the studio canned it, but we’re ready to watch an episode of the dead series.

“Crossfire” brings tactical gameplay and a SWAT team story to the series. A free-to-play game with a large international audience, it may not be popular in the U.S.

“Dungeons & Dragons” has gone global in recent years, and “Secret Level” is its latest conquest. “Baldur’s Gate 3,” released in 2023, won nearly every Game of the Year award.

A “Secret Level” episode offers “Exodus” as an unreleased game. Humanity must flee Earth to fight Celestials in the game. The episode seems to promote the game, but little is known about it.

“Honor of Kings” is a popular mobile MOBA game, but the corresponding episode of “Secret Level” takes a more realistic tone.

The video game icon Mega Man deserves respect from “Secret Level”. The Blue Bomber has played many virtual lives in many genres, but his most famous game is a 2D platforming shooter. Mega Man is Capcom’s most well-known IP, and “Secret Levels” appears to follow suit.

Amazon-owned MMORPG “New World: Aeternum” was featured on “Secret Level” due to brand synergy. Fantasy with a supernatural twist sets the game apart from other major MMORPGs.

“The Outer Worlds” was one of the most unique RPGs released in recent years, so it’s no surprise that the Halcyon episode would be too. Its bright colors, photo-realistic look, and CGI elements seem ideal for exploring this dystopian hellscape run by corporations colonizing the stars.

Pac-Man’s “Secret Level” episode change is the most drastic. Known for navigating mazes while eating pellets, fruit, and ghosts, the episode appears to feature a dystopian wasteland with a homing Pac-Man with razor-sharp teeth hunting an alien.

Playstation couldn’t decide which IP to incorporate into an episode, so they combined many. How and which characters will appear is unknown. Only “God of War” Kratos and “Ghost of Tsushima” Jin Sakai are confirmed.

The “Secret Level” episode seems to match “Sifu”’s difficult beat-em-up and unique visual style. This episode should feature bloody martial arts action like the game.

The immensely successful indie “Spelunky” is also in “Secret Level.” The game involves a hero spelunking through caves for treasure and avoiding enemies.

Expect the bloody “Unreal Tournament” episode to match the game it’s based on. The series helped pioneer online first-person team-based shooters, and episode images show a deathmatch arena ready to fill.

“Warhammer 40,000” is the second tabletop game in “Secret Level” with video game adaptations. The “40K” lore is complex, and the episode may only scratch the surface of the bleak world. However, it may make people join the franchise.
