The harmful and invasive Louisiana crayfish is becoming established permanently in lakes and occasionally even in swimming pools in numerous French regions.

“It’s an impressively large shrimp with two large pincers. “I didn’t feel afraid; I just took it and threw it back into the water,” recalls Saint-Léger-les-Vignes local Nicolas. “I came across them while going for a jog there on the cycle path because they are really pests, they eat wildlife so eat them, you can have a good feast ,” Nicolas, a neighbor, adds.

The Grand-Lieu lake experiences crayfish emigration following a strong rain; this pattern has persisted since 2007. “They must be deceased in order for us to sell them. They are essentially vegetarians, but when they return to the nets, they attack the fish nonetheless, primarily causing harm to them, as explained by Jean-René, a former fisherman.

They even hid in the grounds in the village of Pacé during the Covid-19 pandemic. “They were everywhere on the roads , cars drove over them, so much so that people stopped and thought they were dying,” Charles recalls.

Because they fiercely compete with native crayfish species for food and habitat, red swamp crayfish are regarded as invasive in Michigan. They upend many aquatic species’ food chains by feeding on plants, insects, snails, young fish, and other crayfish.

Originally from the Mississippi River drainage system and the Gulf of Mexico coast, they have most likely made their way into other American waters by being released as study specimens by educators and students, being kept as pets by aquarists, or being bought by people and used for bait fishing or live food markets. They are extensively traded in aquariums and the seafood business in the United States. In pursuit of habitat, red swamp crayfish can migrate up to two kilometers over land, even though they typically disperse along connected streams. They can even withstand dry conditions.

The females may lay up to 600 eggs at a time and reproduce up to twice a year, demonstrating their extreme fertility.

Red Swamp crayfish are present in many types of freshwater habitats and burrow into the bottom of lakes, ponds, and rivers like chimneys, making their eradication all but impossible. The potential for red swamp crayfish to inflict harm to earthen structures makes them a major hazard. They may spread swiftly throughout land and are known to build deep tunnels close to rivers and lakes. More than three feet deep burrows have the potential to destabilize banks and harm infrastructure, including levees, irrigation systems, dams, and private land.

Invasive red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) were identified in July 2017 by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in Sunset Lake in Vicksburg, south of Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo County), and in a retention pond off Haggerty Road in Novi (Oakland County).
