This independent game, which is topping sales charts, is described as addictive by players. One million copies were sold in the middle of last month, when ‘Balatro’ had only been on sale for a month.

Not only did it recover its investment in one hour, but it also made a million dollars in a few hours. This success has surprised its creator, a single programmer working on the mobile version.

How it happened. To understand ‘Balatro’s’ small scale and remarkable success, it is important to note that only one person, under the pseudonym LocalThunk, is behind it. Like many other independent bets of the time, the game was created as a way to distract oneself and its creator’s friends during confinement. It started when Playstack, a small distributor, bet on it.

Chinese origin. The game that inspired poker is actually based on Big Two, a Chinese card game where two is the highest value number instead of ace. Player hands can be increased until each has thirteen cards. The terminology and aesthetics of poker serve as a sugary coating to make a non-player swallow the new rules, with suits and combinations that everyone knows.

Why poker is different. Like the popular card game, you must combine your dealt hands to score the most points. Except for the two, eight, face cards, and aces, which are ten and eleven, all cards are points. Classic poker combinations multiply. Example: Full House multiplied by four. Wild cards, each with its own personality, apply multipliers, such as doubling your first hand or the value of different cards used.

Build decks. Thus, this is a deck-building game like ‘Slay the Spire’ and its many variants, including the multi-million-selling ‘Marvel Snap!’ but not a poker game.

Steam, dragged along by the success of ‘Balatro’, proposed a Deckbuilders Fest that ended last week and showcased a wide range of games in the genre, including ‘Aces & Adventures’, ‘Friends vs Friends’, ‘Ash of Gods: The Way’, ‘Star Survivor’, ‘Shogun Showdown’, ‘Pirates Outlaws’, ‘ORX’, and ‘Chrono Ark’.

Its success secret. Like many other roguelikes, its unpredictability is its strength. Unlike rigid schemes (each game has eight sequences, each with three hands; if you win, you can continue in ‘infinite mode’, but the game is over), we have complete uncertainty that the cards are dealt randomly. Every game is unique.

Destroy the game. According to this Polygon article, one of ‘Balatro’s greatest discoveries is giving the player the possibility of breaking the game (or giving them the feeling that they can), making it possible for the multipliers to accumulate until the player can blow away the opponent with mountains of points. It’s hard—you have to do a lot of numbers and develop a careful strategy—but when you do, the player feels like they’ve beaten the opponent and the system. That’s the most addictive.
