The fish pond of disharmony in Brooklyn

Goldfish have been positioned in a puddle that is fed by a fire hydrant by residents of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. A gentrification process is currently taking place in this historically African-American area in New York City, and the case is making a stir in the neighborhood.

Agriculture of fish as a venture

There are ephemeral fountains that sputter in the streets of Brooklyn throughout the summer months. A predominantly African-American neighborhood in Brooklyn known as Bedford-Stuyvesant (often referred to as “Bed-Stuy”) has developed the practice of unscrewing fire hydrants in order to cool off during the heatwave. A pool that has been formed in the depression of a cracked sidewalk has been receiving water from a leak that has been coming from one of these fire hydrants since August 3.

Within the confines of the shells and the artificial water lilies, one hundred goldfish are seen timidly undulating. “This is the most famous pond in the city, and even in the United States,” exclaims Gavin, who says he was born and raised in the region. Gavin is 35 years old. The project was conceived by a man who was unable to find work and who did not wish to reveal his last name. He stated, “The idea was to bring the neighbors together and beautify the neighborhood.”

Gatherings around the water’s edge

From the state of Texas to the United Kingdom, from Venezuela to Japan… Bed-Stuy is becoming a popular destination for tourists who wish to explore this makeshift swimming pool, which is already included on Google Maps and whose photographs are frequently shared on the internet.

At the location, curious individuals engage in brief conversations with others with whom they would never have otherwise communicated. Writer Ana Tuazon, who lives in New York, frequently visits the puddle to meditate and engage in conversation with people who are walking by. She does this while wearing slippers and holding a latte in her hand. Her observation is that “this whimsical installation is a unifying element in a place as stressful and crowded as New York,” and she makes this observation.

Conflict in the swamp

The concept that Gavin has, however, is not to everyone’s liking. During the early hours of August 8, two neighbors named Max David, who is 32 years old, and Emily Campbell, who is 29 years old, fished out approximately twenty fish to ensure their own survival.

Emily defended herself on the social network Reddit by saying, “I understand the visual aspect of it: a new white guy [in Bed-Stuy] taunting an older black guy,” but she also stated that she had a hard time with animal cruelty. As an indication of the socio-racial conflicts that are shaking up this gentrifying borough, it is seen by some Internet users as an example of the situation.

Taking note of the situation, the New York Times published an article on August 9 describing it as “a neighborhood conflict that has spread far beyond its point of origin.” This conflict extends beyond the conflict that exists between those who defend ponds and those who fight for animals.
