Seven is an absolute classic. Its aesthetics and plot spread like a plague in the second half of the nineties and early 2000s, propelled Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, and David Fincher to stardom. The film’s juicy anecdotes and visual findings show that Fincher was a master of the image even at this early stage of his career. Also available on Netflix, Movistar Plus+, and Filmin.

In a dark, rainy city, two detectives face a mysterious killer who commits ritual crimes inspired by the seven deadly sins. His identity won’t be revealed until the end, and a plot twist with dark implications still shocks today. That ending and Kevin Spacey’s identity defined a generation before the Internet and spoilers.

Kevin Spacey declined to appear in the film’s legendary opening credits to keep the surprise, against the producers’ wishes, who wanted as many stars as possible on the poster. The film’s producers reluctantly agreed, in a tense shoot because Pitt, Freeman, and Spacey refused to film an ending other than the scripted one, in which the protagonists saved Gwyneth Paltrow’s character from John Doe.

Spacey later admitted that he didn’t want to appear in the opening credits and poster because he wouldn’t have to attend film interviews, press conferences, premieres, or presentations. An absolute steal that helped him become one of Hollywood’s most famous actors before his fall and cancellation.

Despite cancellation controversy, ‘Mindhunter’ is one of the platform’s best shows.

Mindhunter, a 2007 Netflix series, was my last time before HBO’s magnificent family intrigue epic. It’s still my favorite platform series five years later.

The intensity and perversity of this brief masterpiece by Joe Penhall (also the screenwriter of ‘The Road’), in which David Fincher directed some episodes, has not been matched by ‘Stranger Things’, ‘The Witcher‘, or ‘Sandman’. It was inspired by a 1977 FBI investigation in which two agents changed how to get into serial killers’ minds.

The series is based on the book written by some of the main characters, and while the agents‘ investigation creates suspense and suspicions, as well as portraits of famous murderers like Son of Sam, Ed Kemper, Charles Manson, and BTK, the reality of an era is most important. A realism that presents heroes and villains without mythologizing serial killers like the worst true crimes.

In ‘Mindhunter’, Fincher’s coldness and perverse sense of humor describe the first times psychology entered the darkest and most abysmal minds, painting a fascinating portrait of these first methodologies. A great cast (Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv) lends credibility and heightens our empathy for a group of researchers who are literally in uncharted territory.
