Sacha Skochilenko's Mother Testifies on US-Russia Agreement

Sasha Skochilenko, a Russian artist, was included in the deal between the US and Russia. She was able to see her mother in Germany after being freed, and she can attest to their reconciliation.

Last week, the US and Russia worked out a historic agreement that will release 16 prisoners detained by the Russian government. Since the Cold War, this is the largest prisoner swap. The young St. Petersburg artist Sasha Skochilenko is one of the prisoners that Moscow has freed.

The artist, who was detained in May 2022 for daring to denounce Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, had altered store labels with anti-war statements. She and her mother Nadezhda were reunited in Germany because of the accord between Russia and the United States. On Wednesday, July 31, in the evening, the latter discovered that her daughter was participating in the prisoner exchange.

“It caught me off guard. I received a call informing me that Sasha had participated in the conversation. Naturally, I was overjoyed, but I also worried that something might go wrong. Aleksandra “Sasha” Skochilenko, a Russian cartoonist and anti-war activist, was released from a seven-year prison sentence last week as part of the historic prisoner swap that also freed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovitz.

After Skochilenko changed five price tags at a grocery store with little pamphlets denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she was detained by Russian officials in April 2022. She was accused of spreading “false information” regarding the armed forces of the nation.

“How weak is our prosecutor’s faith in our state and society if he believes that our statehood and public safety can be destroyed by five small pieces of paper?” Skochilenko challenged the court at her sentencing hearing in November of last year.

Human rights organizations criticized the harsh punishment, claiming that both the accusation and the legislation that punishes the dissemination of information about the Russian military were fraudulent.

“Her persecution has come to represent the crazily brutal persecution that Russians face when they openly oppose their nation’s criminal war,” stated Marie Struthers, the director of Amnesty International for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, at the time.

In Skochilenko’s creation, a protest price tag said, “The Russian army bombed an art school in Mariupol.” Inside, 400 people were seeking refuge from the flames.

Up to 600 people may have died as a result of the blast at the Mariupol Drama Theatre, which served as a bomb shelter, according to an Associated Press investigation.

Skochilenko was a cartoonist before she became a well-known political prisoner around the world. Some of her drawings may be found in her 2014 book A Book About Depression, which is available as an online PDF and has been translated into Spanish and English. Skochilenko describes her personal experience with depression in the comic and how she overcame it.

One day after her release, on August 2, Skochilenko shared a picture of herself kissing her girlfriend with the message “freedom” on her verified Facebook page.
