President Nicolas Maduro's plane seized by US

The airplane was purportedly in breach of US sanctions when it was seized by US authorities in the Dominican Republic on Monday morning and moved to Florida. Caracas declared it to be a “piracy act.”

In the most recent development in the hostilities between the US and Venezuela, US officials declared on Monday, September 2, that they had taken President Nicolas Maduro’s jet because of purported US sanctions violations. The plane, a Dassault Falcon 900EX, was taken in the early hours of the day in the Dominican Republic and flown to Florida, which is southeast of the US.

Attorney General Merrick Garland released a statement saying, “This morning, the Department of Justice seized an aircraft that we believe was illegally purchased for $13 million through a shell company and smuggled out of the United States for use by Nicolas Maduro and his cronies.”

“Venezuela denounces before the international community that once again, the authorities of the United States of America, in a repeated criminal practice that can only be described as an act of piracy, have illegally confiscated an aircraft used by the President of the Republic,” stated the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For its part, the Dominican Republic emphasized that it had not taken part in the Washington-led probe. The plane was in the Dominican Republic prior to the seizure “for maintenance purposes,” Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez clarified to reporters, adding that the country’s authorities “only” reacted to “an international request for mutual legal assistance.”

“Large-scale repression to maintain power”

The American executive branch, led by Republican President Donald Trump, issued an order in August 2019 that forbade anyone in the country from doing business with anyone who had “directly or indirectly acted for or on behalf of the government of Venezuela,” the ministry recalled.

The jet was seized at the same time that the United States and a large portion of the world community protested the Supreme Court of Venezuela’s ruling to uphold Nicolas Maduro’s reelection, which the opposition alleges was decided at the end of July.

“Mr. Maduro and his proxies engaged in widespread repression to maintain power by force, falsified the results of the July 28 presidential election, and falsely claimed victory,” a spokesman for the White House National Security Council stated on Monday. He further stated that, in this particular context, the seizure constituted “an important step in ensuring that Maduro continues to suffer the consequences of his misgovernance.”

The US Justice Department stated in March 2020 that Nicolas Maduro and other senior Venezuelan officials had been indicted. The department also offered a $15 million reward for information that led to the socialist president’s arrest, who had been in office since 2013. These high-ranking officers, together with Nicolas Maduro, were charged with forming an alliance with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in order “to flood the United States with cocaine.”
