Palestinian, Ukrainian, and immigration issues… Chicago Democratic convention, Kamala Harris shows her ambitions

Some of the key components of the Democratic presidential candidate’s platform, especially those related to foreign policy, have been described.

UNITED STATES – On Thursday, August 22, in Chicago, Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic Party’s candidacy for president in November on behalf of all Americans.

At the end of an incredibly exuberant convention, the 59-year-old vice president declared, “I promise to be the president of all Americans,” to thunderous applause from thousands of delegates. Kamala Harris made a powerful, frequently somber, occasionally ferocious address in which she pledged to “chart a new path.”

Notably on the international front, she also demonstrated some of the main tenets of her strategy. So, while the conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in tens of thousands of dead in the Gaza Strip for more than 10 months, Kamala Harris guaranteed “self-determination” for the Palestinians.

She spoke at the platform, “President Biden and I are working to end this war so that the Palestinian people can exercise their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination, and so that Israel is safe, the hostages are freed, and the suffering in Gaza ends.”

The Democratic nominee declared in her address that “it is time to make a deal to free the hostages and establish a ceasefire,” while Israeli negotiators were in Cairo on Thursday to discuss a possible truce in the Gaza Strip that would be linked to the release of hostages. “There have been so many lost innocent lives. People are always running for safety, hungry and desperate. It breaks my heart to see how much misery there is,” she continued.

putting the “broken immigration system” into reform

In a clear jab at Donald Trump, Kamala Harris said that, should she win the presidency, she would “make friends with dictators” and would stand “firmly with Ukraine and our NATO allies”.

“I will not be friends with tyrants and dictators like Kim Jong Un, who support Trump, because they know he is easy to manipulate with flattery and favors, they know he will not hold autocrats accountable because he wants to be an autocrat himself ,” she told the crowd at the Democratic convention.

Lastly, she capitalized on one of the most contentious themes of the presidential campaign by pledging once more to overhaul the “broken immigration system” in the United States.

She declared, “I know we can live up to our proud heritage as a nation of immigrants and reform our broken immigration system,” blaming her Republican competitor for scuttling a bill that had bipartisan support. She remarked, “I won’t play politics with our security.”
