Our autumn reading list at Xataka

Avoid getting distracted by autumn’s ochre colors—we have Sanderson, Guerriero, and Torné to review.

Few things are better for reading than dreary autumn weather. Even without a fireplace, anyone can sit in a warm place at home and read a book that makes us think, distracts us, makes us uncomfortable, or makes us happy. This series of books we’re reading in the Xataka editorial office proves that sometimes all of that happens at once.

In ‘Nexus’, historian and philosopher Yuval Noah Harari discusses information and humanity’s fate. Harari explores how information networks have shaped our world from the Stone Age to AI. The book examines the ecological crisis, disinformation, and AI, asking why we are self-destructive despite our advances. Perfectly timed essay on information, truth, bureaucracy, and power. You caught me halfway through reading this month, but I’ve read enough. Quite strange. Torné is always new, so reading him is strange. His works may seem conventional, and his novelistic vocation, which seeks to connect with James, Murdoch, and Bellow, may confirm that. But no.

Torné obsesses over chronicling the ‘threads of blood’ that connect us to the present and telling them in new ways. Writing about the present is risky. One example, Bellow, won the Nobel Prize and had a huge impact, but he is rarely read today. Writing about the present and narratively analysing life is difficult and uncertain.

In ‘Brujería’, conversations are interpreted similarly. If we read carefully, we see that they are credible despite our standard literature’s initial judgement. If more were needed, Torné is interesting and fun. Although we are light years from his aesthetic references, he can brighten your week, month, and part of the year. Javier Jiménez

I adore fantasy novels. It’s one reason I love Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive, our Lord. Reading so many books by one author can make it hard to start another. I accidentally found The Licanius Trilogy. I read a review about Michael Kramer, the actor behind The Stormlight Archive audiobooks, that recommended other books he has narrated. That led me to The Licanius Trilogy.

‘The Licanius Trilogy’ is a magical mystery. A Gifted School student named Davian can tell when others are lying. Davian has no other powers, unlike his classmates, who can use “essence” magic. If he fails to use essence in time for his Council tests, he will lose his powers and become a shadow, a social outcast with black veins on his face.

Davian receives a wolf-patterned box from a mysterious man before his trials. Unsure of who or where to deliver the box, he asks the young man to travel. The man warns that the magical Border that protects society from Aarkein Devaed’s monsters will fall if he doesn’t. After agreeing, Davian realises something is wrong.

I’d compare it to ‘The Witcher’ and ‘Dark’. Reading it has prevented me from reading anything else. The series begins with ‘The Shadow of What Was Lost’ The book is not in Spanish, but the audiobook is. I recommend it to fantasy fans. Jody Serrano

The true story of Silvia Labayru, a young Montonero militant in 1976 Argentina during the dictatorship. She was kidnapped, tortured, and raped by ESMA soldiers while pregnant. She had her daughter in captivity. And she lived. Next, she was shunned and suspected. Leila Guerriero uses this fact to write a complex and difficult book about a country’s dark years and a person who survived and lived in exile in Spain for over thirty years.

Leila met Silvia for over two years and spoke with her family, friends, ex-partners, and ESMA survivors. Leila has done it again: reconstructing and narrating the story in detail, using the information she has well. She tells everything from close up but maintains the right distance; she doesn’t judge or take sides. She weaves the protagonist’s and other characters’ contradictory memories into the story. She says in an interview, “You have to look closely and tell from afar.”

The author is a great narrator, and this book is no exception. She brings you close to any event and keeps you in the story. She sees everything, nothing escapes her, and you can tell she knows how to read between the lines of the person in front of her and make us feel like we are there, close to each moment. She is interested in the story and makes you feel the same way. She tells every detail of each interview, including clothes and hairstyle, even if the other person looks tired, worried, or happy. These details engage the reader, letting them form their own opinions. Eva López.
