Nuclear labs praised Cameron's realistic

The explosion was filmed using various methods to achieve maximum realism.

We all remember Sarah Connor’s nightmare in New Mexico as she falls asleep in ‘Terminator 2’ She imagines a nuclear holocaust if the machines rise. She stops in front of a park and sees herself younger with John Connor, but a blinding light takes away her childish joy.

This nuclear explosion destroys Los Angeles like nothing ever seen on screen. Among the film’s most memorable scenes are the blinding flash that sends mothers and children sprawling across the land and the wave of fire that chars everyone, including Sarah Connor, whose skin burns and screams in pain.

This sequence was designed to be realistic by Cameron. Special effects studio 4Ward Productions visualized it. After considering blowing up a model with TNT in the desert, they decided against it due to unpredictable results. They used CGI shots, blew up real models, and added a mushroom cloud made of Plexiglas and fiberglass lit from behind.

After the premiere, a nuclear laboratory wrote to Cameron because the result was so close to a real explosion thanks to Cameron’s expert consultation. He was praised for visualizing “the most realistic nuclear bomb explosion in the film. Hiroshima looked like this.”

A bright, sunny day on Los Angeles’ outskirts. Children play in a beautiful playground. A merry-go-round spins lazily, a see-saw goes up and down, and a swing set glides higher. Happy and joyful moments should be set there. Instead, it hosts one of cinema’s most terrifying and memorable scenes.

Parents and children duck for cover when a bright flash goes off in the distance, causing their bodies and the ground to smolder, smoke, and then burn. A growing dome of fire hotter than the sun vaporizes the distant buildings. As infrastructure collapses, cars and buses are blown away like leaves on a windy day.

Back at the playground, miles away, everyone is screaming as their bodies blister and char, turning their limbs into brittle ash. They disintegrate into clouds after the shockwave hits them.

It haunts me as much as when I first saw it 20 years ago. For someone who thought kids were safe in movies as a child, seeing innocent children explode in front of my eyes was shocking. Then seeing Sarah’s flesh peel away to reveal a skeleton on that fence as her chilling scream echoed? That broke me then and still makes me wince and turn my head.

Even though it’s Connor’s nightmare, that vision is terrifying. After all, how can a nightmare make a nuclear explosion scarier?
