Netflix controls 38% of international anime revenue.

We rarely mention it as one of Netflix’s great commercial assets, but more and more viewers are searching for anime on the world’s largest streaming platform. Netflix accounted for 38% of anime industry profits in 2023, according to Parrot Analytics.

5.5 billion. The streaming anime market earned 5.5 billion dollars in 2023, according to the analysis. Netflix contributed 2,073.9 million, or 38%. The market is very global, but Asia contributes 1.6 billion and North America 2,237, which seems absurd. Remember that we’re talking about streaming platforms, not home video or local broadcasts in Japan.

Crunchyroll along. Naturally, Crunchyroll, an anime platform, follows Netflix. Sony-owned, it earned $1,161 million in 2023, placing it comfortably second. Given its specialisation, its growth is subject to the global anime market, unlike Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video, as The Wrap notes in its analysis of these results. Whatever happens in the anime industry, they can all increase their income.

The Hulu case. A close second to Crunchyroll is Hulu, which made $903 million in profits (as with all of them, we’re only talking about anime profits). This is notable because Hulu is only available in the US and lacks Japanese animation programming. Thus, Disney’s platforms’ power and drive are shown by Hulu’s prominence.

A remarkable catalogue. Netflix’s anime is one of its most profitable genres. Despite having few classics and relying almost entirely on new productions, live-action adaptations like ‘Avatar’, ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’, and ‘One Piece’ have helped it expand its catalogue. It has even challenged ‘Dragon Ball’, whose latest series, ‘Daima’, it shares with Crunchyroll and is attracting a large audience.

Pioneering. Netflix has been trying to expand its audience by going beyond the usual series and films, as shown by its strong commitment to anime and its steps into video games, where it is building a powerful catalogue of interesting exclusives. Netflix stopped providing subscriber figures because it was reaching a growth and income ceiling and would instead communicate based on growth and benefits.

Japanese anime is popular! As you may know, anime has reached a new popularity level. The industry has grown rapidly, doubling in size in ten years.

This growth is due to video streaming platforms’ widespread adoption. Recently, Japanese anime series are broadcast worldwide in real time. During the COVID-19 pandemic, video viewing times skyrocketed, boosting anime popularity.

Anime is now mainstream, especially for Gen Z digital natives.

According to Dentsu Inc.’s independent US survey, anime is becoming more popular worldwide. Part 1 covers the anime industry’s latest developments in the US and worldwide from Dentsu Inc.’s Content Business Design Center’s Eimi Shimizu, a long-time US resident.

The anime market grew rapidly to 2,742.2 billion JPY in 2021. The industry is massive any way you measure it.
