Proper names like Sardá, Quintana, Campos, Navarro, García, and De la Morena are associated with intense conflict

One show accusing another, with names and surnames, of sabotaging guests on Thursday’s ‘La revuelta’ was unusual. These conflicts are often resolved in offices, corridors, and behind cameras. Machiavellian strategies can cause a negative outcome, such as a deer’s rut resulting in an explosion. Motos and Broncano have fought before. Media star brawls are a TV staple.

Motos often faces multiple rivals in its time slot, but none had been as lucky as Broncano, so ‘El Hormiguero’ reacted with virulence. However, it has had to deal with 100 programs, including La 1 proposals like ‘Enredad@s’, ‘TVEmos’, and Javier Cárdenas. Telecinco also tried, running a long list of failed products. The last one, ‘Babylon Show by Carlos Latre’, couldn’t last more than two weeks against ‘La Revuelta’ and ‘El Hormiguero’.

The Ana Rosa Wars
Ana Rosa Quintana’s schedule has caused conflicts with rivals. At present, she is engaged in a heated conflict with Sonsoles Ónega and her ‘Y ahora Sonsoles’. Although audiences are comparable, Ónega typically wins, with Ana Rosa’s ‘TardeAR’ only taking the lead on a few occasions. For 18 years, Ana Rosa and Susanna Griso have competed in the mornings with ‘Espejo Público‘. Despite parallel audiences, Ana Rosa led with ‘Las mañanas de Ana Rosa’.

Her greatest rival was María Teresa Camos, who left Telecinco in 2004 to join Antena 3’s mornings. There was an exchange because Ana Rosa left Antena 3 after ‘Sabor a ti’ was canceled. In 2005, Ana Rosa’s morning program on Telecinco caused María Teresa Campos’ ‘Cada día’ to be replaced by Susanna Griso.

Late-night chaos
When it existed in Spain, late night television was the most contested time slot before the Access Wars. The clash involved a US-imported talk show format adapted for ‘El Hormiguero’ and ‘La Revuelta’. Telecinco premiered ‘Esta noche cruzamos el Mississipi’ in 1995, a mix of humor, events, and gossip never seen in Spain. It peaked with its Alcàsser report. To combat it, Antena 3 used its budget and hired Navarro to start ‘La sonrisa del pelícano’ there.

The Telecinco response was overwhelming: Xavier Sardá began with ‘Crónicas marcianas‘. With the success of ‘La sonrisa del pelícano’, Sardá and Navarro began a fierce competition for high-audience share (around 20% share). In one month, Sardá strengthened a hysterical style full of freaks, while Navarro was embroiled in a series of controversies about the Arny case and the GAL that would lead to the program’s cancellation in 1997, supposedly for Antena 3’s ethical reasons.

Crónicas marcianas closed without a challenge and with the highest audience in its time slot. In 2004–2005, it clashed with Andreu BNuenafuente, which lost viewers but couldn’t stop a veteran show. The same year Buenafuente arrived, Sardá retired, undefeated by the audience war despite the format’s wear and tear and the death of Joan Ramón Mainat, one of the space’s creators and Sardá’s right-hand man.

One last media conflict could be a series. In 2021, Movistar Plus+ produced ‘Reyes de la noche’, which was not renewed for a second season due to pressure from José María García, according to José Ramón de la Morena. In the 1990s, two sports-focused radio journalists, ‘El larguero’ and ‘Supergarcía’, engaged in a heated debate that transcended audience numbers and became personal.

José María García, who left ‘Hora 25’ on the SER in 1981, pioneered sports journalism with his aggressive style and promoted Antena 3, the first radio project to succeed. One of the first journalistic superstars, ‘Supergarcía’, gained power and influence in the sector, leading to financial success. After acquiring the SER in 1985, PRISA introduced a lighter, more friendly style with José Ramón de la Morena (García’s intern) and ‘El larguero’, which began in 1989.From the start, García insulted PRISA and De la Morena’s methods, prompting a retaliatory response.

The editor of ‘El larguero’ accused the director general of SER of favoring García, leading to the journalist’s discipline. When García returned, star signings and journalists from other PRISA media followed, but did not replace him as leader. Following PRISA’s controversial 1992 acquisition of Antena 3, García and Antonio Herrero joined COPE and began attacking SER’s owner. The tension increased when De la Morena was allowed to attack García without limits.
