Marvel's new film 'Agatha, Who Else

The first Marvel series since the inconsequential ‘Echo’ at the start of the year, ‘Agatha, Who Else?’, shocked viewers and quickly became one of the company’s best. It succeeds in competing with ‘Wandavision’ and the best of ‘Loki’, ‘Moon Knight’, and ‘She-Hulk: Hulka Advocate’. ‘Agatha‘ is more consistent and has fewer ups and downs.

‘Agatha, who else?’ stars Vision and Scarlet Witch’s villain, one of the best audiovisual Marvel Universe discoveries outside of Captain America and the Infinity Gauntlets. The evil witch Agatha Harkness, played again by Kathryn Hahn with malice (and a sense of humour), pays tribute to the Marvel area of sorcery led by Doctor Strange in the MCU.

Like the Scarlet Witch in ‘Wandavision‘, Harkness is exiled in an imaginary world. After regaining her memory, she forms an impromptu coven of witches to escape her enemies and recover her powers, along with old rivals and a mysterious teenager who seems to know more about her and the dark arts than he seems.

It begins with pop witchcraft and creepy nightmares and hallucinations. Once the main plot begins (at the end of the second chapter, becoming a dark ‘The Wizard of Oz’), the series alternates between light humour and Marvel witch gags. The film may not appeal to those who prefer the Fights + Political Commentary genre of ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ or the Adult Gap of ‘Loki’ or ‘Moon Knight’.

Ms. Marvel and ‘She-Hulk: Hulka Advocate’ may be the closest comparison to ‘Agatha, Who Else?’ Besides starring a woman, this one is corrosive and irreverent. Like ‘The Acolyte’ and ‘Rings of Power’, fans don’t care about them. It’s not a good sign (one cancelled, the other drawing complaints with each episode), but it shows that Marvel is trying to avoid being too much like itself.

Because Disney may have realised that the continuity path immediately after ‘Endgame‘ (‘Black Widow’, ‘Eternals’, ‘Shang-Chi’, ‘Wakanda Forever’) has not worked 100% as planned, despite their box office success. They limit MCU options. ‘Agatha, who else?’ isn’t perfect, but it tests alternatives to epic stories of redemption and dark pasts (although it has something: we’re in Marvel, not A24).

To this end, ‘Agatha’ dabbles in the meta humour that worked so well in ‘She-Hulk’, but it doesn’t go as deep as ‘Wandavision’. Its first episode imitates Nordic thrillers and has great opening credits. It also explores pop witchcraft with nods to folk horror fans, with moments as glorious as the witches’ song, which sounds like a throwaway from ‘The Wicker Man’.

All of this with a cast that is fully complicit and aware that they are departing from the Marvel canon and causing some wounds in the most ardent fans with their feminism for the masses. And a very visible LGTBI spirit, displayed in openly gay characters and in the lesbian vibrations of Agatha and Rio Vidal (monumental Aubrey Plaza), the witches’ two pillars.

Not everyone likes it? Not even remotely. It’s imperfect? No, as it’s a Marvel series and real risk is prohibited. It’s a freer Marvel with room for more than green screens, cheesy space opera fruit salads, and recycled choreography. As expected, the review bombing and trve fans’ inconsolable cries will derail a good direction. In the meantime, let’s laugh at Salem, relatives, and new age candles.
