Marvel’s Disney+ launches most-watched list

Disney’s top-rated shows now dominate the platform’s homepage.

Netflix’s competitors watch its every move to see how they can copy it for their own gain. Sometimes they change the business, like restricting account sharing, introducing advertising, or raising rates. Other times, small changes seem inconsequential but can reveal platform strategies when analyzed.

A new top. Disney’s top-watched shows list debuted last week. Daily updates and country-specific adaptations are made. Thus, at the time of writing, I have in the top series ‘Yo, Agregado’, ‘Ayla y los Mirror’, and ‘Regreso a Las Sabinas’, which are only for Spanish audiences. This list of hits is based on Netflix’s weekly Top 10 worldwide.

Why Disney? Disney’s top, which promotes the platform’s programming, is less informative than Netflix’s due to its unsystematic program classification. Disney’s goal with this novelty is to promote certain programming. For instance, last week a Halloween-themed movie or series topped the list, so this more or less remote-controlled list of hits is a hybrid of editorial recommendation from platforms like Max and algorithmic magic. Visibility is desired.

Disney+ will feature a Top 10 list of popular movies and TV shows. Note that parental control settings and Hulu titles for Disney Bundle subscribers will affect the list.

Based on content availability, users in different countries may have slightly different lists.

Disney says it will base the list on episode and movie views, as well as new title popularity.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Top 10 list today included Halloween-themed films like Hocus Pocus and a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror special.

Discovery is one of streaming’s biggest product issues, and while algorithmic recommendations are important, Top 10 lists and other features that highlight popular content are also popular. People want watercooler talk.

Netflix publishes its Top 10 list online since 2020. Disney hopes its new list encourages “engagement and discovery of new titles.”
