'Kraven' highlights the inadequacy

Sony’s Spider-verse returns a few months after ‘Venom 3′ But unlike that closing of the trilogy starring Tom Hardy, ‘Kraven the Hunter’ has very bleak prospects: forecasts predict between 13 and 15 million dollars in its first weekend, which would make it the worst debut of this franchise, below the already disastrous ‘Madame Web’, which took 15.3 million.

An era ends. Many media outlets agree with The Wrap that ‘Kraven’ will end this strange string of Spider-Man movies without Spider-Man due to the sense of impending disaster. Although these are an analyst’s hunches, the experiment is costing Sony (which has not commented on the article) so much money that they are accepted as valid because they make sense. Marvel and Sony’s complicated relationship is longstanding.

Cinematic Spider-Man. Spider-Man’s many adaptations are literally from its parents. Not all countries saw his first films, which were rehashes of late 1970s TV shows. Spain did. We also enjoyed Toei’s Spider-Man with Power Rangers-like monsters, a bizarre series rarely seen in Europe or America, during this crazy time. Sony acquired the character adaptation rights in 1999.

Classics. Sony produced two animated series and five Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield films with that license. The MCU came along, and Marvel wanted to use its most iconic character, so in February 2015 they reached an agreement to use Spider-Man as a supporting character in Marvel films while Sony could continue making films with him and his usual villains, hence this string of films with arachnid nemeses. After the deal was renewed in September, Tom Holland’s most successful film, ‘No Way Home’, was released. In addition, the two (soon three) brilliant Spider-verse animated films will be split into multiple spin-offs.

The villain mess. Sony was on track until it decided to make Spider-Man movies without him. Since ‘Venom’, it was clear that steps were being taken to create its own MCU with one of its key pieces. The post-credits scenes took sequences from the Spider-Man movies or brought together villains from this subset of evildoers, such as Michael Keaton’s Vulture (from Tom Holland’s first movie) and Jared Leto’s Morbius.

Numbers are bad. Let’s review this strange Spider-verse’s film numbers.

Venom (2018): $100–116 million/$856.1 million
Venom 2 (2021): $110 million budget, $506.8 million gross.
Morbius (2022): $75–$83 million/$167.5 million gross
Madame Web 2024: $100 million budget/$100.5 million gross
Venom: The Last Dance (2024): $120 million budget, $472.9 million gross.
Despite appearances, the third ‘Venom’ opened poorly in its first weekend and was saved by the international box office. The rest’s numbers are visible, boosted by incomprehensible setbacks like ‘Morbius’ re-release or Dakota Johnson’s statements.

A failed brand. With these elements, ‘Kraven’ must change the concept, aesthetics, and content of these films to revive the franchise. The director of ‘Kraven’ said a sequel would adapt ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’, one of the most famous Spider-Man comics. It appears no one has informed him that they need Spider-Man.
