Why, though, a beige suit? The attire of female politicians in the United States is always the subject of intense scrutiny, more so than in Europe. On Monday, August 19, the first night of the Democratic convention in Chicago, Kamala Harris was unable to elude the scrutiny. Furthermore, the color is under dispute because she chose the pantsuit solution. Vanessa Friedman, a fashion columnist for the New York Times, was intrigued and gave up trying to defend her decision to wear beige that day. However, she fully grasped the significance of the candidate’s midnight blue Chloé suit, which she wore for her Thursday, August 22, closing remarks: “Kamala Harris is dressed for a new era.”

Understanding how a timeless midnight blue suit may represent a new era involves deciphering a hidden meaning. Women in American politics who achieve prominence often commemorate this achievement by donning white, the color of the suffragettes. At the Democratic convention in 2016, candidate Hillary Clinton made her own speech while dressed in a white suit. She, along with a number of other speakers and numerous delegates, were dressed in white this week in Chicago.

What made Kamala Harris defy convention? Specifically, she has transcended that point. She made no mention of the fact that she would be the first female president of the United States if elected on November 5 in her speech on Thursday. This is a well-known fact, but it is no longer a point of contention in campaigns. Women in politics and feminism are being redefined by Kamala Harris.

Philadelphia was the first choice made by Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris for the official beginning of her campaign on Tuesday, August 6, alongside her running companion for the first time. Not only is it located in the vital state of Pennsylvania, but it is also the magnificent city that served as the American Republic’s founding capital and the location where the Constitution was drafted in the summer of 1787.

Democrats frequently bring up the preamble of the text, citing the phrases “We the people of the United States” as well as the subsequent phrase “In order to form a more perfect union.” This phrase is usually believed to be an aspiration toward a multiracial democracy, a type of social structure beyond the imagination of the Founding Fathers, many of whom were slave owners.

The controversy sparked by his pastor Jeremiah Wright’s statements sharply denouncing discrimination against Black people had compelled him to take action. As he did throughout his presidency, the Democratic nominee in November distanced himself from this vision, advocating instead for a “more perfect union” in which the US would demonstrate the realization of the American dream and thus assert its geopolitical advantage over the rest of the world.

Harris has so far adhered to a distinct strategy. Harris, who initially backed Obama but supposedly detests being compared to him, has not changed her stance. The candidate doesn’t seem to be in a rush to play the identity card, having served as the first female district attorney in San Francisco, the first female attorney general in California—the state with the largest population in the nation—and the first female vice president of the United States. She frequently quotes her mother, Indian-born oncology researcher Shyamala Gopan, while discussing her career-breaking achievements, as she did in her post-election victory statement in 2020: “You may be the first, but make sure you are not the last.”
