Hollywood's latest franchise promotion

According to reports, “Deadpool and Wolverine” is already shattering records at the movie office and receiving acclaim from critics. Nevertheless, it is a lot more than just a movie.

A number of individuals have been heard to exclaim, “Hey, ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ isn’t a new formula!” “There have been previous Deadpool movies!” ‘Airplane!’ and other insane comedies directed by the trio/institution Zucker, Abrahams & Zucker are examples of movies that use the same self-referential humor that is characteristic of the mutant mercenary’s films. As a result of the power of multiversal, Deadpool and Wolverine have joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), creating something that is more than just a satire; it is a vehicle for spreading propaganda. The Merc with a Mouth becomes a Funko enumerator, a brand ambassador that assesses all of the house’s intellectual properties, in the short that is his most referential film to date (which is saying something). “Remember that pre-MCU smash from the late ’90s when it was released? The statement “It’s still ours!” is followed by a series of “no matter what happens, our new Fantastic Four will be better than that laughable 2005 movie” that is sent out to fans.

The box office sensation that occurred during the summer of 2017 served two purposes: first, it was a catalogue of models that were already available for purchase; second, it was a demolition of the Mattel brand, which called into question its iconic image and positioned the manufacturer as the antagonist in the matter. Mattel is, of course, overjoyed, and the fact that dozens of films based on toys are currently in the process of being made is evidence that Barbie does not have the potential to be a corrosive force for the brand. However, this does not imply that Barbie is not a very notable film for other reasons.

Furthermore, it is not the only one. On the one hand, this use of comedy to take the edge off the corporate tentacles of the firms that are behind consumer products draws inspiration from pop comedies that are subtly anti-capitalist, such as “Spiceworld” or “Josie and the Pussycats.” But above all, from milestones like ‘The LEGO Movie’ or ‘Space Jam’, which functioned simultaneously as catalogues of franchises of boundless breadth (and derived commerce) and as a mockery of that same state. The game that ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ now draws inspiration from is one that is both satirical and wicked.

That’s all right, fans. The fact that fans are thrilled with the winks, easter eggs, and half-hearted advertising is evidence that the corrosive trait of Deadpool has been completely subdued. For example, the persistent joke that Hugh Jackman is going to be forced to play Wolverine until he is ninety years old would be a corrosive observation on Disney’s industrial voracity if it weren’t for the fact that… the average fan is delighted by that slavery. Although it is not the first movie to use this Machiavellian publicity strategy of self-parody disguised as advertising, the way franchises operate gives us reason to believe that it is not even close to being the last one to do so.
