Fraud Plea Expected from Former Rep. George Santos

Central Islip Former U.S. Rep. George Santos is scheduled to plead guilty to many federal fraud offenses, a source said.

The person said New York Republican Mr. Santos will plead guilty at a Long Island court hearing on Monday.

His plea was confidential, and he spoke to The Associated Press anonymously.

Three lawyers representing Mr. Santos were contacted for comment.

Prosecutors and Mr. Santos’ lawyers requested the court hearing on Friday for Monday afternoon. They also received pretrial deadline postponements.

Just weeks before jury selection on September 9, the news was announced. Mr. Santos has pleaded not guilty to lying to Congress about his riches, collecting unemployment benefits while working, and using campaign contributions for designer apparel.

The New York Republican was booted from Congress in December after an ethics inquiry found strong evidence that he breached the law and abused his public position.

Former Rep. George Santos is set to plead guilty to multiple federal fraud offenses in court Monday afternoon, according to a source.

On condition of anonymity, the individual told The Associated Press about the plea. Santos and his lawyers declined comment.

Trial is scheduled for early next month. Prosecutors and Santos’ lawyers requested the Long Island Monday afternoon court date on Friday. A request letter did not explain its purpose.

Santos has pled not guilty to lying to Congress about his riches, collecting unemployment benefits while working, and using campaign contributions for personal needs.

The 36-year-old was previously considered a budding political star after flipping the suburban district that encompasses the affluent North Shore of Long Island and part of Queens in 2022.

His life unraveled before he became office. He was accused of lying about having worked at major Wall Street businesses, having a college degree, and other biographical details.

This raised suspicions about his campaign financing.

In May 2023, he was indicted on federal charges but refused to retire. An ethics investigation found “overwhelming evidence” that Santos had breached the law and misused his public position for profit, expulsioning him from Congress.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Santos claimed in a December interview that a plea deal with prosecutors was “not off the table.”

In an interview with CBS 2, he said, “I think everybody should be afraid of going to jail, it’s not a pretty place and uh, I definitely want to work very hard to avoid that as best as possible.”

As the trial date approached, Santos’ lawyers argued in court papers that “the mere risk of public ridicule could influence the individual jurors ability to decide Santos’ case solely on the facts and law as presented in Court.”

He also requested a written evaluation of him from possible jurors. His lawyers claimed the survey was necessary because “for all intents and purposes, Santos has already been found guilty in the court of public opinion.”

Joanna Seybert kept jurors’ identities public but rejected the questionnaire.

Prosecutors wanted to prove that Santos worked at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs and ran a family-owned corporation with $80 million in assets had been financial lies during his campaign.

The former congressman’s two campaign aides have pled guilty to campaign offenses.

In October, his ex-treasurer, Nancy Marks, pleaded guilty to fraud conspiracy, accusing Santos of falsifying his campaign finance records using a loan and bogus contributors. A Marks lawyer claimed his client would testify against Santos if asked.

A month later, former Santos fundraiser Sam Miele pled guilty to federal wire fraud for impersonating a high-ranking congressional assistant to gather money for his campaign.
