Evacuees in LA cannot return for "at least a week".

Amid worries about landslides and exposure to poisonous substances, authorities in Los Angeles warned Thursday that tens of thousands of residents who had to leave their homes due to wildfires would have to wait “at least another week” before they could return.

“We have a group chat where everyone is complaining and getting upset and wondering why they keep locking us out of our homes,” Ronnen Miz said to KTLA, the local television station.

Even though their homes were fortunate enough to escape the violent fires that have ravaged parts of the California megacity and destroyed more than 16,000 hectares over the past ten days, the evacuees are becoming increasingly frustrated with local authorities’ orders that prevent them from going back to their homes.

The cause: According to local officials at a press conference, the current state of affairs is too risky. There has been significant damage to the gas, electrical and sewage systems. There is toxic garbage everywhere. Additionally, there is an increasing chance of mudslides or landslides.

Sheriff Robert Luna of Los Angeles County stated, “It’s going to take a while,” “I would say at least another week, and that’s an estimate, but I think it’s going to take longer than that.”

The possibility of rain

The community of Altadena, north of Los Angeles, and the affluent Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, northwest of the megacity, were engulfed in raging flames that killed at least 27 people, according to the most recent data released on Thursday.

As search crews continue to go through the debris, the death toll is probably going to increase over the next few days.

Landslides

Firefighters and the more than 900 inmates who came to assist made headway Thursday as the heavy winds that had been blowing across the Los Angeles area for more than a week and stoked the flames subsided.

“It’s the first thing I’ve done in my life that I’m proud of,” 29-year-old inmate Jacob Castro told AFP while undergoing training at one of the firefighting training camps administered by California police.

He exclaims, “It’s a chance to redeem myself,” with joy.
