Commemorating 50 years of SATS service

Imagine 5 decades dedicated to one area or purpose. It’s rare in today’s fast-paced world, yet SATS does it.

The firm honors 315 25-year employees with Long Service Awards in 2023. Apron Services’ Foo Hee Koon, Goh Wah Kwee, Liew Yiat Kim, Soon Chin Meng, and Poh Ah Kow stand out. In addition to commemorating 25 years, they are lifting the roof for 50 years with SATS.
Historical path-building

Picture 1972. No smartphones existed, and the internet was unimaginable. The aviation was changing. A bunch of strangers entered SATS, their second home for 50 years.

Hee Koon, Wah Kwee, Yiat Kim, Chin Meng, and Ah Kow started as youthful recruits with simple roles. They have witnessed SATS’s growth from a Singaporean firm to a global organization with offices in key airports.

Strangers from varied origins become family-like friends. They contributed to SATS’ history as well as observed it.

Let’s celebrate their 50th anniversary by highlighting their stories of resilience, friendship, progress, and thankfulness.

The gentlemen have always faced change at SATS. Both the aviation industry and they changed.

It became evident that adaptation is crucial during the transitions. Hee Koon says, “You can’t stay still when everything around you is moving.”

Chin Meng says, “When I joined, there were no computers yet, but I taught myself computer skills to do my job.” Yiat Kim agrees, saying, “Switching from the kitchen to the ramp was a world of difference, but I embraced the challenge and quickly adapted.”

Ah Kow and Hee Koon, ramp training officers, remember their early SATS days fondly. They were versatile ramp workers, loading, unloading, and driving airside vehicles. The smiling Chin Meng recalls his journey: “I kept upgrading myself to reach this 50-year milestone.”

Veterans on the ramp team have watched diesel tractors become electric, pen-and-paper become computerized, and even weathered Covid-19 and SARS. They’ve done it all, proving age doesn’t matter in learning.

Company that cares
Beyond their professional duties, these men have found something special that has kept them at SATS for 50 years. SATS is integrated throughout their life, not just a workplace.

Wah Kwee proudly recalls how SATS provided bursaries for his children’s education, demonstrating the company’s ethos. Ah Kow calls their staff an extended family, a sentiment shared by many. “Without supportive colleagues and a great team, we wouldn’t last 50 years.”

When Ramp Training Officer Hee Koon relates heartwarming stories of former trainees’ acknowledgment with a cheery “Hi, Uncle!” his face lights up. He takes joy in watching these trainees become ramp personnel and equipment operators, like watching his own children grow. Such events make SATS a workplace where lifelong relationships are formed.

The aviation sector has changed dramatically in 50 years. Ah Kow, Chin Meng, Hee Koon, Wah Kwee, and Yiat Kim have persevered, illustrating that loyalty and camaraderie are a company’s heritage. They teach us that loyalty is about developing together.

The consensus is to accept change, be patient, and respect time. Just update yourself and be eager to learn,” says Chin Meng.

Committing 50 years to one goal is impressive. Our 50-Year Long Service Award honorees inspired us with their experiences. From the simple past to the complicated present, they have seen it all and flourished.
