Taiwan and China have a tense relationship. Japan sent its first warship through the Strait in September, drawing attention from Beijing. Then documents showed that the nation’s military is studying the Ukraine war and planning for a conflict with its “neighbor.” Taiwan recently raised an army off the coast.

Military operations. Taiwan has seen 53 military aircraft and 90 Chinese-flagged vessels in waters from the southern Japanese islands to the South China Sea in the past 24 hours. Thus, the scene is the largest single-day air activity display in history.

Beyond that. Since the 1996 presidential elections in Taiwan, China’s 90-vessel naval deployment is the largest military movement in the region. These staged operations from different Chinese commands increase military pressure on the island and tension between both regions. In the background, a Chinese display showing its ability to isolate the island and deter American allies like Japan and the Philippines.

China has not announced military maneuvers, but Taiwanese officials suspect this deployment is intended to surprise the island and may be related to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s recent visit to Guam and Hawaii, where he met with American politicians.

Taiwan has raised its alert level to maximum in response to these actions, which add to China’s military exercises aimed at intimidating the island and its allies. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also called these activities a threat to regional stability and accused China of “destabilizing” the Indo-Pacific.

Tense geopolitics. This is old. China claims Taiwan as its own and opposes official exchanges with the US. President Xi Jinping has called “reunification” with Taiwan “inevitable” and never ruled out force.

The Chinese government continues to condemn the sale of American arms to Taiwan, sanctioning defense companies and executives in response to the $387 million military package. The Taiwanese president’s recent visit to Hawaii and Guam angered Beijing enough to accuse Taiwan of seeking American independence support. The Chinese government has threatened to confront any “provocation” and resolve the Taiwan issue “completely.”

International responses. President-elect Donald Trump has supported Taiwan, calling for increased military spending and emphasizing its semiconductor industry. Meanwhile, the island nation is visiting Pacific nations that support Taipei over Beijing to strengthen its diplomatic alliances.

Considering other recent moves, what is happening now should be a staged display. It appears that China has increased its military activities, especially since Lai took office in May, including two Joint Sword-2024 exercises. As reported, Beijing simulated blockades, attacks on key targets, and closures of strategic ports in Taiwan, demonstrating its ability to encircle and intimidate the island.
