The Japanese entertainment industry exports roughly 27 billion euros annually.

Anime is one of the country’s biggest growth engines.
Netflix and other major streaming platforms have joined the bandwagon.

We’ve all seen anime. Each and every. Jose Miguel: “No, I’m 60 years old, that’s what made me old,” is false. You’ve seen anime. Netflix, with titles like ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’, ‘Hunter x Hunter’, ‘DanDaDan’, ‘Baki Hanma’, ‘Naruto’, ‘Ranma 1/2’, ‘One Piece’ from Egghead, ‘Haikyuu!’, ‘Blue Eye Samurai’, ‘Pluto’, and ‘Jujutsu Kaisen‘, is the mainstream platform betting the most on the genre. The live-action ‘One Piece’ has helped introduce Oda’s work to newcomers.

Prime Video offers ‘Spy x Family’, ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’, ‘My Hero Academia’, ‘Dragon Ball Super’, and ‘Attack on Titan’. Bleach, Tokyo Revengers, Sand Land, and Summer Time Render are among Disney+’s intriguing titles. Max has been left behind, and the most powerful thing, the recent anime adaptation of “Uzumaki,” started off strong (and so much, what a barbarity), but after the first episode, an exercise in how to animate a manga, the series has gone downhill without brakes.

It’s not perfect. While the anime industry is having a golden age, the reality is complicated. Like science, anime must be done, not made. Drawing and animating are skills not everyone has. Due to low wages, skilled workers are scarce.

New animators start as “genga men,” drawing in-between frames and key frame connections. Based on an AJA report, the New York Times reported his 2019 salary as $12,000. This excludes freelancers, who earn even less. Some earn $200 a month. The average well-paid animator earns $40,000, compared to $65-75,000 for a famous American animator.

The Asashi Shimbun reports that many of Japan’s 6,000 animators “leave due to poor working conditions.” “The average salary for animators is around 1,300 yen per hour, well below the average of 2,400 yen for all industries,” the site says. Thus, a Japanese animator earns 8 euros per hour.
