We watched how Paul Atreides joins the Fremen, which may be better than you think.

We attended an exclusive twenty-minute screening of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, ‘Dune: Part II’, last November. This sequel is one of the most anticipated films of 2024. It is too early to say, but we believe this next installment could be even more exciting than the first. Why? We explain.

Villeneuve’s first Dune picture scarcely showed Arrakis, the desert planet where the Emperor’s two major houses—the Atreides and the Harkonnens—fought. Two persons survived the latter’s murderous attack on the Atreides headquarters to assume leadership of Arrakis: the heir Paul Atreides and his mother, who joined the Fremen tribe on the sand world.

One of the first parts we saw pits them against a squad of Harkonnen soldiers hiding in the dunes. A thrilling scenario that maximizes the environment: the first film had huge action scenes, but this one was much smaller. Also, Jessica Atreides takes charge of protecting her kid.

Villeneuve said he decided to give Herbert’s female characters a well-deserved and necessary update as one of his few alterations. The Canadian filmmaker claimed Jessica “in the novel simply disappeared after a certain point,” but she will become more important in the movie. Remember that ‘Dune: Prophecy’, the HBO spin-off of the films, will focus on the Bene Gesserit, Jessica Atreides’ sisterhood that controls the empire from the shadows.

Two more scenes with personality-driven ladies exemplify this viewpoint. Princess Irulan, the Emperor’s daughter, is played by Florence Pugh. In this brief scene, she talks to her father about the regent’s agreements with the Harkonnens, suggesting that this Bene Gesserit may not become a docile wife of Paul Atreides like her counterpart in the books.Perhaps because Chani, Zendaya’s character and Paul’s love, is in it.

Villeneuve may be catering to a normal romance and ignoring the practically feudal future society described in the books, when marriages of convenience and herds of children are the norm. Villeneuve has probably tamed the novels to suit the public’s tastes here, but sequences we’ve seen but can’t explain make us trust the Canadian director’s vision.

This next installment’s action sequences show that it may differ from the original. We can’t say more because we signed an embargo, but we promise that the famous sequences that were absent in the first film (and that have been teased in sequel posters) will work at full capacity.

With an incredible cast (including Léa Seydoux, Christopher Walken, and Javier Bardem, who surprised the presentation to praise the director’s vision), this could be the year’s biggest science fiction blockbuster. This time we have proof: our twenty-minute voyage to Arrakis has already required us to prepare our canteen and nasal respirators.
