A wonderful infographic illustrating Tolkien's Bestiary

The author J.R.R. Tolkien was responsible for creating one of the most wide and epic realms in all of the literature that has ever been written. To this day, it is still a remarkable accomplishment that he was able to create a world that was significantly larger than Middle Earth and other continents that he created. Every single creature that lives in Tolkien’s imagination, even the most uncommon animals that only appear on a few pages in his novels, has a history that is connected to other races. This is what makes Tolkien’s writing such a complicated yet magnificent experience.

In point of fact, Tolkien’s descriptions, sketches, and precise notes are so specific that he entirely shaped the various animals and what they would be like from the ground up. Unfortunately, he was never able to witness them being screened on a large screen.

Although the majority of fans are more aware with the film adaptations of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series that were directed by Peter Jackson (which largely deal with the events that occurred during the War of the Ring), this is only the tip of the iceberg on the subject. The Third Age is the time period that Tolkien refers to as the time period in which the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins, two hobbits who are devoted to comfort and who are sent on difficult missions across Middle-earth by fate, take place together.

What exactly does that say? That the films have neglected millennia of history that have already occurred by the time the majority of us first get acquainted with Arda and its people: this is something that has been ignored by the films. The author refers to his fictional version of Earth as Arda, which includes both Middle-earth and Valinor, the eastern region from which the Elves depart at the conclusion of The Return of the King. For those who have not yet read The Silmarillion, Arda is the name given to this rendition of Earth by the author.

In order to build his imaginary world and the people who lived in it, Tolkien drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including global history, mythology, philosophy, and religions, as well as his own experiences and experiences fighting in World War I. For there is only one ring that can govern them all. Who, however, is “all”? Elena Fever, a designer, has translated and modified a stunning infographic that illustrates the creatures that inhabit Tolkien’s mind.

The book contains information about the elves, who are the most ancient and noble of the speaking races in Middle-earth. They are the first children of Eru Ilúvatar to enter the world, and they were later discovered by the Valar. The Valar also discovered the dwarves, who are also known as Naugrim, Khazâd, and Gonnhirrim. These dwarves are renowned for their expertise in mining and goldsmithing, and they possess a remarkable longevity. Alternatively, there is the race of humanoid monsters known as the orcs, which Morgoth conceived of and who initially served him. In the future, they would be of service to Sauron, his successor, in his endeavor to acquire the one ring and establish dominion over Middle-earth.

It is important to note that the chart does not contain a significant number of other creatures, such as the Maiar and the Valar, which are the most powerful entities in Tolkien’s cosmos. The majority of these Middle-earth wizards, who are descended from magical spirits, relocated to the Undying Lands of Valinor, where they exist as pure energy that cannot be destroyed. However, there are some Maiar who have assumed human bodies in order to aid either the good or the bad.

In a stroke of good fortune, designer Elena Fever has produced a graphic that does, in fact, include all of these different races and species. Consider, for instance, the Nazgûl, which, according to the Black Speech, translates to “Ringwraiths.” These individuals served as slaves of the evil lord Sauron. After having been great fighters of men in the past, they were bestowed with the nine rings of power, which granted them immortality. They were, however, soon tainted with corruption. All kinds of monsters, including spiders, trolls, wargs, and every race of elves, humans, dwarves, and orcs, are included in the infographic by the time it is finished.

This week marks the conclusion of the first season of the Amazon Prime Video series The Rings of Power, which has brought us back to Middle-earth and is bringing the series to a close. These graphics are a good way to broaden our comprehension of this huge and wide fictional realm.
