A violent black comedy with great dialogue

This sequel has as much comedy as action or science-fiction, which may disappoint long-time science-fiction fans who demand that it be taken seriously like Predator. If you also think that the first installment of the saga—bodybuilders in the jungle fighting an invisible enemy—should be used almost exactly in the sequels, things get ugly.

Fans who have already seen the film risk missing out on a great action and comedy that shows Shane Black and Fred Dekker’s personalities. Both have turned a myth from their youth into an intelligent and ironic eighties action film. Yes: scarce nostalgia.

‘Predator’ is a buddy film. This may seem sacrilegious, but the protagonists’ chemistry has been crucial in the three previous installments. The first part’s military camaraderie is successfully replicated here. The sweaty policemen of the vindicable second installment (which already featured a Predator in the asphalt jungle) have different personalities. In ‘Predators‘, dangerous criminals must work together but bond.

Quinn (Boyd Holbrook), an Army sniper, accidentally finds a Predator that falls to Earth. The Army, aware of the situation, detains him with a lobotomized soldier, a religious fanatic, and a Touette Syndrome patient to silence him. Quinn’s ex-wife and autistic son join him in the Predator hunt.

Shane Black believes the series is about who fights the monster, so he makes the soldiers crazy, with mental illnesses, post-traumatic stress, or conflicting personalities. Black recognized that his model was ‘The Dirty Dozen’ and made the anti-Predator force as suggestive as the nemesis, a series strength.

Black and Dekker are great at agile, cheeky dialogues full of verbal challenges that underlie a unique camaraderie that is out of fashion in this time of tortured and traumatized heroes. Remember that Black wrote ‘Lethal Weapon’, ‘The Last Boy Scout’, ‘Deadly Memory‘, ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’, and ‘The Nice Guys’, which featured charming and suggestive antiheroes, losers whose personalities trumped the plot.

In addition, Black wrote and directed ‘Iron Man 3’, a highly anticipated Marvel film. A colorful, light-hearted comic book that adds a child, Christmas, and the company’s trademark sparkling dialogues while overdoing the fake drama. Fans were disappointed, but it shows that ‘Predator’ is both a comedy and an explosive action film.

The film not only defies the typical sequel to a long-standing franchise, but also sets the tone for the film with its mix of comics and video games, introducing new elements such as a family with issues, gore, and savage violence typical of B-movies.

Is this appealing fruit salad presented in a balanced and effective manner? Black, who has been defining a concise and personal style since the eighties, is not to blame: the film’s many cuts in the editing room (from more than two hours to a meager hundred minutes) affect rhythm and scene transitions.The cuts were so disproportionate that Edward James Olmos’ army general character disappeared, but Black pays tribute to him with a small nod to one of his most famous roles. As expected, the result is disjointed, and the final confrontation (in the trailer we see some shots that don’t appear in the film) feels brief and insufficient. The conclusion was originally shot during the day, so it had to be reshot at night to fit the series’ style. Paradoxically, this makes the new Predator, the series’ new enemy, less threatening due to little screen time. On paper, the film’s main draw falters.
