A new 'The Simpsons' episode is praised

The Simpsons’ latest episode has garnered attention for two reasons: first, it’s a meta episode titled ‘Series Finale’, which it’s not because it’s the 35th season’s premiere.

Second, its sharp humour and aggressive barbs surprised us. Is this an oasis in a series that has been declining for years, or have we just not noticed that ‘The Simpsons’ are cool again?

The episode’s topic. The episode is a gala to celebrate ‘The Simpsons” supposed final episode, hosted by the simpsonized version of Conan O’Brien, who wrote the show’s first seasons. There, Fox reveals that it has been trying to cancel the series for years and will do so with an AI that will write the best ending for this television myth.

Meta-component. O’Brien then shows us unreleased clips from many of the series’ most famous episodes, including ‘Bart the Daredevil’ from the second season, which featured Homer’s cliff fall.

O’Brien says this episode or others were supposed to end with Homer’s death. Fox made them change them to pay for Bart’s parade balloon’s helium costs. This meta nod retells familiar episodes in a new way, which fans like.

Bart won’t mature. In the AI-designed episode, Bart discovers that Springfield residents are finally finding happiness, such as Marge and Homer reconciling with a marriage counsellor and others finding better jobs outside the town. However, he clings to his old ways, condemning his neighbours to continued unhappiness. A great metatextual and philosophical commentary on how viewers want to see eternally conflicting lives for fun.

The good times. Not a classic like the series’ legendary episodes, but a great chapter. It confirms fans’ long-held belief that ‘The Simpsons’ is good again since 2023. This theory has been read online in multiple media. For many fans, the curse that began around season 10 has ended, resulting in a debacle in the quality of the show as the scripts became repetitive and lost their bite, immersed in Homer and Marge’s marital problems like any other sitcom.

More viewers. The Vulture article linked above states that seasons 32 to 34 were when the change began to be noticed (although many fans called seasons 32 and 33 the worst in the series’ history), even in viewership, which increased 24%.

After exploiting the early satire, the series has moved towards surreal, absurd humour in the last two years. Although that path has not yet been exhausted, the characters’ potential as pop icons is being explored.

Playing with format. Thus, we have seen the series play with its own format, including mockumentary, dreamlike, and fictional artefact episodes. ‘The Simpsons‘ postmodern outburst won’t bring the new seasons to the heights of its classic era, but it shows a willingness to change.
