The giant robot action series is sad to say goodbye to its fans.

The Power Rangers franchise’s future is unknown. A year ago, Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury and the hour-long special Power Rangers: Yesterday, Today, and Forever ended the series, which had been running since 1993 with multiple cast and title changes. The special brought back some classic cast members and had a strangely elegiac tone. Netflix’s “Power Rangers cinematic universe” cancellation indicated a franchise stall.

Despite the launch of the excellent video game ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind’, scheduled for 2024, Hasbro, the franchise’s owner since 2018, has dealt the property a major blow this weekend. It auctioned many series-related items on Heritage.

This includes exclusive costumes, morphers, monster masks, and accessories, including character street clothes. The auction began on the 18th and continues to offer many items at reasonable prices. For fans and collectors, it’s a chance to get items from an iconic series, but for its followers, it’s a reminder of how mistreated the legacy has always been for generations of viewers.

Hunter Deno (from ‘Dino Fury’ and ‘Cosmic Fury’) and Yoshi Sudarso (from ‘Dino Charge’) have criticized Hasbro for auctioning off the suits without consulting them. Some said the suits could have gone to the original actors or stuntmen or been auctioned for charity.

David Fielding (interpreter of the original Zordon) calls this Hasbro move “a door that closes”. Auctioning feels like the end of a 30-year saga. In April, Hasbro announced an agreement with Playmates Toys to distribute future Hasbro toys starting in 2025. Never has “Metamorphose” been more accurate.

When I first watched ‘Power Rangers’, I felt a strange mix of excitement and indignation. I loved the schizophrenic cinematic movement, with its physics-defying zooms, garish colors, monsters that moved with St. Vitus’ dance, screaming and histrionic villains to the point of ridiculousness, and above all its fights and gigantic robots.

My childish brain couldn’t understand why I had that American series on TV in the afternoons instead of my favorite on the first channel, which I watched for so many Saturday afternoons. What happened to my victory song, with its military hymn qualities and unrhymed couplets “Half man, half robot/There is no braver hero/Bioman, Bioman defender of the earth” that opened a similar series?

To my 12-year-old justice, the vile American producers had plagiarized “Bioman,” and I was right, but the Power Rangers’ story was more complicated and would have ramifications, which I already knew but couldn’t relate. More than 20 years later, Lionsgate and Saban are rebooting the 1990s’ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Another Japanese friend who would have up to two American versions is necessary to understand Power Rangers history. Godzilla, the nuclear monster par excellence, was the heir of the American imagination from King Kong, the first colossal monster to attack our cities. But that’s too deep.

Returning to the giant Japanese lizard, we’ll find many of the constants that created the style we all know: giant rubber monsters besieging humanity. Godzilla was likely the first Power Ranger, but later films focused on destructive aliens and the bug became the great Japanese defender. All this special-effects entertainment was called tokusatsu.

Many of those movies were adapted into television series, and soon, the tokusatsu would have laid the groundwork for the Sentai and Super Sentai series thanks to colorful characters like Ultraman and Kamen Rider, who could change size to fight the different creatures, each episode stranger, with the only requirement being a person inside a suit.
