Two astronauts risk a 6-month ISS stay.

NASA is concerned about a problem with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. It could have to wait for Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to return on a subsequent SpaceX mission in February.

Their assignment was initially scheduled to run for a week, but it may be prolonged as long as February 2025. It’s possible that Boeing’s new Starliner spacecraft’s first two astronauts will have to wait for a SpaceX capsule to return to Earth. This kind of situation, which NASA announced on Wednesday it was taking into consideration due to Starliner’s issues, would be embarrassing for Boeing.

The massive aerospace company was given a new capsule development contract by NASA ten years ago, the same year that rival SpaceX was established. However, Elon Musk’s business has already completed four Space Station (ISS) missions.

With Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, the first astronauts, aboard for a last test flight before normal operations began, Starliner lifted out in early June. However, Starliner experienced helium leaks and issues with its propulsion system while in flight. Despite this, it made it to the International Space Station (ISS), where its initial plan was to dock for just over a week before returning with its crew.

However, NASA planned to conduct a number of experiments to identify the root reasons of the issues that were being faced. Furthermore, the space agency is unconvinced by the current outcomes. As a result, according to NASA official Steve Stich on Wednesday, it is currently looking into the option of having Starliner return empty to Earth and transporting the two astronauts back in a SpaceX ship.

Decision by the middle of August

In practical terms, the plan is to leverage Crew-9, SpaceX’s upcoming manned mission. Four astronauts were supposed to be a part of the ISS crew on this normal rotation mission. In the end, only two astronauts could launch on this trip in order to retrieve the two Boeing space castaways when it returned. Thus, the latter would stay on the ISS until February, when Crew-9 is scheduled to return.

During a press conference, Steve Stich stated, “We have not approved this plan.” However, he continued, “we have done everything necessary” to make it happen. He said again, “Our preferred option is to bring Butch and Suni back on board Starliner,” adding that additional testing should enable technical teams to better understand the dangers associated with the issues they were experiencing on board.

According to him, NASA must choose between the two choices by “mid-August.” The launch window for Crew-9 was rescheduled from August to late September in order to allow NASA additional time to make its selection.

Boeing is “confident.”

Boeing said in a statement on Friday that it was still “confident” that Starliner will be able “to return safely with the crew.” The business stated, “We continue to respond to NASA’s requests for additional testing, data, and analysis.” As usual, the corporation did not take part in the Wednesday press conference.

Steve Stich said he was aware of “disagreements.” According to him, NASA authorities “would like to better understand the causes and the physical mechanisms” that led to the propulsion problems before permitting the astronauts’ return.

Though these will have to be used during the disorienting descent to Earth, some thrusters failed when the ship docked with the International Space Station. But no matter what, Steve Stich reassured, “Starliner has a bright future,” speculating that the issues would eventually “be repaired.”
