Amazon doesn't care we didn't like it.

One of 2023’s biggest audience mysteries is ‘Operación Triunfo’. Based on Prime Video’s limited reach statistics, success seemed likely. In Spain, its opening gala was Prime Video’s most watched national premiere. The free voting app had 53 million votes. With 718.9 million TikTok and YouTube views, social media success was reported.

New data. SigmaDos30 provided a season-long audience analysis, but these are not Prime Video data. The audience measuring organization has tracked viewers month by month from November’s premiere and found a significant increase:

Less than free-to-air TV. At the end of the episode, Prime Video said that over 3.5 million viewers watch the weekly galas. This is a significant reduction from the 20 million viewers per edition on free-to-air television since 2017, with 5 million unique viewers per gala.

Definitely not a failure. As we’ve said before, Prime Video has fewer viewers, but this doesn’t make it a “failure”. Amazon wants to lure individuals to Prime and its massive digital store, not only enormous audiences.

Not leading… The consultancy’s estimates show that ‘Operación Triunfo’ has not led Prime Video audiences any month since its release, regardless of Amazon’s forecasts. It fell 10.5% behind ‘Memento Mori’ and ‘La que se avecina’ in November. In December (12.1%), below ‘La que se avecina’ and ‘Padre no hay más que uno 3′. The best was 12.4% in January, behind ‘La que se avecina’. December saw a decline to 11.5%, below ‘La que se avecina’, ‘The Hunger Games’ latest installment, and ‘El pueblo’.

But it succeeds. Prime Video has done other good things for the platform, despite Amazon’s focus on selling on Amazon. ING Direct and Mapfre sponsorships. Presence in media and networks beyond the platform, separate from a shift in public opinion of Prime Video’s future offerings. Amazon’s tentacled interests may value that over audience growth.

What a week before Gala 10! Wardrobe disasters, video calls, rituals, birthdays, tricycles—this week has it all. The contestants’ close bond was shown in numerous lovely moments dancing and vibing together. Martin and Juanjo’s kiss was another cute moment, but some say it was unnatural and a ploy to get viewers to vote for them. However, I think that is too cynical because 1. They’ve already kissed freely on screen, so it seems like a natural development, and 2. Juantin fans will vote for them regardless of the kiss, while non-fans will not. Move on and let them be happy.

I’ll review Gala 10, the quarterfinal, despite not speaking Spanish (so don’t come for me and apologies if I make any mistakes). It began with Fun and Monáe’s “We are Young” performance, which served Glee in the finest way. Then came Lucas and Chiara’s performances, scheduled for elimination. Lucas sang “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” romantically with falsetto and runs. Chiara rocked “You Oughta Know,” initially playing electric guitar, which I liked. Although both performed well, I think Lucas’s was better.

Naiara followed with “Despechá,” a dance break and crowdsurfing? As a melancholy song, Martin’s “Ya no te hago falta” was the opposite of energetic. I felt the feelings, but I didn’t understand the lyrics, so that reduced them. Paul Thin sung and staged “Paenamorar”! The circle of dancers around Paul and his moves made the performance intense, hooking me. Next was Ruslana, who sang “El mundo” powerfully and wonderfully. I didn’t anticipate Juanjo to sing around cardboard cut-outs of himself, but it added a whimsical touch to his bouncy rendition of “Take On Me” and was a nice tribute to Aha’s music video. This song is difficult to sing, and he hit the high notes brilliantly. Finally, Bea’s “Se acabó” was stunning and earned a standing ovation from everyone, which was not surprising given her prior standing ovations from the other participants in both micros. Also, my favorite performance of the night.
