The 2025 blockbuster season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent years. The most anticipated blockbuster films of the year include superhero action films, scary horror films, and Oscar-winning films by Bong Joon-ho and Guillermo del Toro.

After 2020’s The Invisible Man, Leigh Whannell directs Wolf Man, another classic horror character. It stars Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott and opens on January 17 to kick off the year’s big releases. The film follows a family attacked by a strange beast at their remote farmhouse. After being bitten, the father becomes menacing.

Captain America: Brave New World is the first of three MCU films this year. Steve Rogers’ Captain America is replaced by Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Harrison Ford will play the Red Hulk, and Liv Tyler will reprise her role as Betty Ross from The Incredible Hulk (2008). Rosa Salazar, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tim Blake Nelson also star.

Sci-fi director Paul WS Anderson returns with a film starring his wife and collaborator Milla Jovovich. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world with magic and witches, based on George RR Martin’s short story.

After winning the 2020 Oscar for Parasite, Bong Joon-ho directs this sci-fi film starring Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun. The film is based on the 2022 novel Mickey7. Since Parasite was a financial and critical success, Bong fans have been waiting for his next film. Mickey 17, originally scheduled for 2024, will release on March 7.

Steven Soderbergh’s new espionage thriller Black Bag stars Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan. David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park and the first Mission: Impossible, wrote the film. The cast includes Tom Burke, Naomie Harris, Rege-Jean Page, and Marisa Abela.

Jack Black and Jason Momoa star in Minecraft’s film adaptation. The film, directed by Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess, follows a diverse group of characters who become engulfed in the game.

Thunderbolts*, the second MCU film of the year, stars characters from previous films and TV shows. Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus star. The title references a new group of crime-fighting superheroes who work together despite their differences.

In the last installment of the 1996 hit series, Tom Cruise reprises agent Ethan Hunt. The eighth and final film in a genre-defining franchise is The Final Reckoning. Newcomers Vanessa Kirby, Hannah Waddingham, and Katy O’Brian will join the usual cast.

After the live-action success of The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin, Disney continues to adapt its animated catalogue with Lilo & Stitch. The little blue alien will star with Zach Galifianakis, Courtney B Vance, and Tia Carrere.

When Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan star in Karate Kid: Legends, the franchise will experience an apocalypse. Macchio, the original Karate Kid, did not appear in the 2010 reboot with Chan and Jaden Smith. This film features them training a new karate student for the ultimate tournament.

Disney’s Pixar had huge box office success with Inside Out 2 last year after several failures. This year, they hope to continue the trend with Elio, an animated film about a boy beamed to another universe with otherworldly creatures. Being human, he is mistaken for Earth’s ambassador and must represent humanity. Yonas Kibreab, Jameela Jamil, Brad Garrett, and Zoe Saldana voice the film.
