DC's plan to "Marvelize" itself is fully revealed

Superman returns, and the trailer reveals the next DC Universe.

Here we go again. Here’s the trailer for the renewed DC Cinematic Universe, a bet that will last for years. Monster Commando is a great preview. After the box office disaster of’Flash,’ we knew that’Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ would be the last film in Zack Snyder’s pessimistic Justice League, and James Gunn promised a complete renewal.

That renewal is already evident in a trailer that is more colorful and comic book-like than previous DC adaptations (even the sentimental part is “brighter” than Snyder’s twilight tone). The trailer’s first criticisms compared it to the CW series (which we didn’t mind: they were much more DC-like than Snyder’s endless puberty shows).

However, there is room for surprises beyond ingredients we already knew we would have (and were excited about, like that Krypto who saves the day) and that involve the first elements of the DC Universe, like Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Metamorpho, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl. Gunn has stated that his DC would not focus on the shared universes that bankrupted the MCU, but these appearances suggest otherwise. Since a Lanterns TV series is in development, these appearances will not be one-time events like the Justice Society in ‘Black Adam’.

The accent on Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and the Daily Planet, plus an old-fashioned aesthetic, show that Gunn wants to emulate Christopher Reeve, the best Superman of all time. The color treatment in some shots grates due to its artificiality, but it’s minor (it’s not as outrageous as in the teaser we saw yesterday) and can be fixed. We take it as a promise that this July film will go in the opposite direction of Zack Snyder’s. That’s enough for us now.

According to a survey recently conducted by Morning Consult, superhero movies are on the decline. In the infographic seen above, both Marvel fans and adults overall who enjoy superhero movies have declined by 5% each. That’s not much, but it could mean superhero movies are going Western.

Marvel Studios has had some box office disappointments since Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home ended The Infinity Saga. All Marvel Phase 4 films except Spider-Man: No Way Home, which could be considered an epic Endgame film, have underperformed. Thor: Love and Thunder is at $600 million worldwide and unlikely to surpass 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, while Black Widow and Eternals may be box office bombs and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may not reach $1 billion. Shang-Chi won because it opened with $75 million and grossed over $400 million worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. It did well for a film about a character few people know.
