The protagonist of Broncano's biggest win

Unexpected content helps Broncano win.

Since day one, we’ve said that the competition between ‘La Revuelta’ and ‘El Hormiguero’ is a social media fiction between fans of both shows. Broncano’s show has filled a gap in the audience’s viewing habits, appealing to a demographic that didn’t watch Motos. Yesterday was La 1’s first clear win, and in special circumstances.

The numbers. Broncano’s win over Motos was clear this time. ‘La Revuelta’ was the most watched show on Tuesday, December 10, with 15.7% share and 2,124,000 viewers. Motos had 11.9% and 1,599,000 viewers, giving Broncano almost four points. They coincided with the Atalanta-Real Madrid Champions League match that Movistar Plus+ broadcast from 9 p.m. and had a 7.4% share with 979,000 viewers, which partly explains the lower-than-usual audience for both programs, though the drop was not proportional. The strictly coincidental time slot saw ‘La Revuelta‘ with 16.2% share and 2,190,000 viewers and ‘El Hormiguero’ with 11.6% and 1,574,000.

Extreme content. Broncano did it with an interview with Ana Belén that included dancing and a blindfolded, cheating, timed chess game against the Spanish Champion. The ‘El hormiguero’ guest was C. Tangana and Yerái Cortés, who seemed infallible. Motos even appealed to his recalcitrant young audience. But Broncano won again by several lengths.

The biggest yet. ‘La revuelta’ has never distanced itself so much from ‘El hormiguero’, which posted its lowest figures of the year last night. Although football and the deer rut scandal may still affect metrics (Broncano rose to its best, then fell to its worst), it seems to be taking an unexpected lead again this week. This year, Broncano and Lalachús will perform the New Year’s Eve chimes, creating a new challenge for Atresmedia, which previously had no issues with Chicote and Pedroche.

Not a one-hit wonder. From these numbers, Broncano’s success is not a passing success due to its novelty, but rather a long-term presence in that slot, contaminating programs beyond ‘El Hormiguero’. However, talking about a “war” is biased because Motos’ program will continue to feature advertising, while La 1 only shows controversial promotional content.

Although Broncano does not beat Motos, his numbers show that competition is possible.

Without surprises, Broncano’s TVE version of ‘La resistencia’, ‘La revuelta’, is unlikely to fail in ratings to compete with ‘El hormiguero’. On the first day, notable figures are opposing Motos’ program, which has no challenger. At the start of the school year, prime time competition will be fierce.

The numbers. Broncano’s debut exceeded even the presenter’s expectations. He said at the Vitoria FesTVal last week that “if we get 15% on Monday I believe it, but if we get 6% I believe it too.” He achieved a 17.1% share and 2,152,000 viewers, which is unusual for La 1 and six points higher than the channel’s daily average. ‘MasterChef Celebrity’ premiered to 11.3% success.

‘El hormiguero’ survives. This success hasn’t hurt Pablo Motos’ stellar ratings, but it makes sense that Antena 3 is watching ‘La revuelta’s next moves. Victoria Federica’s first television interview had 23% share and 2,893,000 viewers, 8.2 points above the Antena 3 average. It led Broncano by 5.3 points from 9:52 to 10:52 p.m.

A victim. Carlos Latre’s “Babylon Show” had been unpopular for two weeks and had already announced that he would withdraw from the fight two days a week. The show dropped to 3.1% and 400,000 viewers in its two-week run, a record low. Other access programs like ‘First Dates’, ‘El intermedio‘ (also hit by Broncano and Motos), and ‘Cifras y letras’ outperformed Latre.

Do not overreact. Broncano’s La 1 debut must be considered when evaluating these numbers. Many viewers would be curious if the show had lost its acidity or identity, and the guest had not been announced. ‘El hormiguero’ couldn’t afford a bad figure yesterday, so it chose a media-friendly first interview character.

The usual order. Broncano’s first program, which featured Aitor Francesena, world champion of adapted surfing, as a guest, was most talked about for Grison’s tattoos of Pedro Sánchez (because he thought the program would take on political overtones and had to be in line with the channel) and Pablo Motos, for when they apply for work next year. In other words, everything in the usual caustic and rude line, in a joke that Pablo Motos may already be planning to respond to on ‘El Hormiguero’ given his sense of humor.

True to itself. The most surprising thing about ‘La revuelta’ is that it had no surprises: the humor, rhythm, favorite questions, complicity with the interviewee, Castella and Grison’s interactions—everything was the same as in ‘La resistencia’. The setting and theatrical format were the same as before, but the Movistar program’s six years of junk was gone, which the presenters fixed by referencing ‘La resistencia’ lore.
