‘La Casa de Papel’ and ‘Élite’ are just the beginning of a production gaining international recognition.
We don’t pay much attention to Spanish streaming productions, but they generate volume and revenue for platforms beyond one-off international hits like ‘La casa de papel’ or ‘Élite’. The Wrap recently published figures proving Spanish production companies’ importance in streaming fiction.
Latest, queens and zombies. Spanish streaming success ‘Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin’, released last Friday on Prime Video, is easy to verify. Apocalyptic fiction about infected people has topped the platform’s ratings in 90 countries, including the US. The film is based on a best-seller by Manel Loureiro that begins a trilogy, so Carles Torrens’ film should have continuity. On Prime Video, ‘Reina Roja’ is one of the new series with the most new subscribers or renewals.
Extra availability. ‘Apocalypse Z’ is not an isolated phenomenon: between 2021 and 2023, Spanish productions’ platform availability increased 22%, helping many of them become hits (quality is important, but visibility is often more important). More than 200 Spanish titles are platform favorites.
High revenue. The Wrap reports that Parrot Analytics estimates that Spanish productions’ revenue to platforms worldwide is rising steadily: from $1.19 billion in 2021 to $1.4 billion in 2024 (if the firm’s last quarter forecasts are met), with a significant increase of more than $100 million between 2023 and 2024. Revenue exceeded $5.1 billion over four years.
First on the list. Are those 5.1 billion euros relevant to global production? Yes, they account for 8.9% of global non-English language production income, with Spain in fourth place. As we know, only Japan, South Korea, and India are international production giants ahead of it. Because Spanish is so widely spoken, Spain is the leading European nation internationally.
An important Netflix bet. Just look at Netflix’s top Spanish productions to see their impact. As mentioned, ‘La casa de papel’ and ‘Élite’ have had international sequels, proving their importance. Additionally, Albert Pintó’s ‘Nowhere’ gained the most subscribers for the platform in 2023, 79,000 in its first 13 weeks. ‘Birdbox Barcelona’ and ‘Hermana Muerte’ are also close, with 64,000 and 49,000 subscribers, respectively. Not to mention the impressive renewal numbers.
Spanish language content accounts for a large share of global demand and has crossed borders in both Spanish-speaking and non-Spanish-speaking markets.
