Disney+ launches its war against shared accounts eight months after its announcement.
Disney ha iniciado su plan para acabar con las contraseñas compartidas. It is planned to reach US users and other regions of the world this week, but it is unclear which. During a shareholder meeting in February, Disney announced that its previously announced strategy to close shared accounts would be implemented this year. More recently, September was confirmed globally without details.
New options. Disney announced on its blog that users who share an account with someone outside their household can add that person as a “Extra Member” for $6.99 per month (Disney+ Basic) or $9.99 (Disney+ Premium, without ads). Extra Members are limited to one per account. If they subscribe to the platform separately, shared account users can transfer one of their profiles.
Detecting households. Disney claims that its platform will automatically set a user’s household based on subscription activity, linked devices, and internet connection. Disney+ may require you to enter a one-time password to verify that you’re adding a location to your household or travelling, like Netflix.
The end of the year was busy for Disney+. Coincidentally, or not, it plans to release some of its most powerful films and series in the coming months, including ‘Inside Out 2’, ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, ‘Eyes of Wakanda’, and ‘Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man’ (November). However, there are some notable price increases coming.
First was Netflix… Ted Sarandos’ platform was the first to propose these cuts, as we said when describing Netflix’s ‘Great Correction’ strategic process. Curiously, it proposed it to stop losing subscribers in 2022, and it worked well: the rate changes and the ban on shared accounts raised its subscriber numbers, leaving the competition even further behind. Disney CEO Bob Iger has never denied that Netflix’s policy inspired him to raise rates and control shared accounts.
…and the cheapest. Netflix is cheaper than Disney+. Additional Netflix accounts cost $7.99, but the program is only available on one of its two ad-free tiers. Comparing these extra member rates to Disney+’s new €89.90 to €119.90 per year prices highlights the advantage. IndieWire estimates that an extra Disney+ Premium member will cost 62% of the total price under the new prices, compared to 52% for Standard and 35% for Premium on Netflix.
Neue Strategie. Disney+, like Netflix, wants every household to pay for its subscription. Disney expects more subscriptions than cancellations due to its catalog’s appeal. Netflix has gained 45 million customers and 300% in share price since banning account sharing. A tempting prospect that Disney+ is about to take a risk on.
