The first season of 'The Rings of Power'

Finally, the “woke speech” and season 1’s dire reviews seemed unimportant.

The public’s perception of ‘The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power’ has changed from a series universally despised to positive impressions, moderate praise for its spectacular nature and vision of Tolkien’s world, and confirmation of what we said a few weeks ago. The series targets a wider audience than fans.

Story of contempt. No recent series has been more flatly rejected by anti-woke activists and fans less willing to accept changes. In practice, how did this happen? Rotten Tomatoes scores are low, and Amazon has closed IMDB and Prime Video scores. Amazon seemed satisfied with the audiences, but external studies showed a 50% drop in the second season.

The second is better. However, the series’ reception has improved: on Rotten Tomatoes, fans’ second-season score is not as bad, though still low. Positive reviews call it “the biggest leap in quality ever seen in a series.” Espinof colleagues called it “a formidable season finale.” also praised the visuals. On social media, viewers seem to be more tolerant of the series as a whole, possibly because they’ve realised that African-American elves don’t matter.

…but not everything is perfect. Of course, we still get good reviews. 3DJuegos called the season’s final twist “a moment of real embarrassment” when reinventing a key character’s name from the original trilogy. The Stranger’s identity, which contradicts Tolkien’s texts, is called “the greatest betrayal ever committed to the universe of The Lord of the Rings” on the French website Jeux Video. We can pick positive and negative reviews to satiety, but they show that we can find one good and one bad easily.

A non-fan series. We said at the time that Amazon would have struggled to create a $400 million-per-season series to satisfy only Tolkien fans (and there are many, but Peter Jackson’s films were successful because they captivated people outside the fantasy genre, apart from forming a new generation of fans—who now complain). Prime Video needed to broaden its audience.

It’s something. Episodes like the Battle of Eregion may appeal to this audience because they reference classic conflicts like the Helm’s Deep and offer enough emotion and epicness. For instance, several chapters focus on Sauron (Tolkien may not have approved of such an intimate approach to his villain,

but this is typical of a popular series scriptwriter). This also explains the series’ darker, more violent tone since the first season, clearly aimed at a more commercial audience. Though it won’t please everyone, the series is finding its audience.
