First images of a Nintendo Switch

Possible leaks revive talk of Nintendo’s unannounced console.

Although Nintendo won’t say much, the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 remains conditional and future-proof. Only that a Switch 2 will be released soon has been announced by the Japanese company. Rumours of a continuation console and an announcement this year grow, but nothing more. Today is the first console image leak.

These CAD (computer-aided design) images have appeared on the networks, and while Nintendo has not confirmed or denied them, many of their features, like the magnet system below, match recent patents. Media like VGC validate them with their own sources. Although hosted on an external server, the images have disappeared from Reddit and the Chinese forum where they were first seen.

These designs are still on Tom Warren’s post. Using reverse engineering from two real images, the 3D printing expert created the images. According to Nintendo Prime, the author is followed by Switch accessory manufacturers like Mobapad, which lends legitimacy to the images. However, we insist that their authenticity is uncertain.

Netizens have also determined that the board shown (which Digital Foundry experts say is very credible) was manufactured in October 2023, suggesting a non-final prototype. The design is similar to the Switch OLED, with a support tab to stand it upright and a base connection to connect it to the Dock, but with a new top USB C port and a second button on the right controller.

Screen appears larger than Switch. Although Nintendo has patented a magnetic connection, the rail system for attaching controllers to the screen has disappeared. In addition, leaked specifications (12 GB RAM, 256 GB internal storage) match early-year rumours of an 8-inch screen.

We’ve all been calling the next Nintendo Switch design the Nintendo Switch 2 until Nintendo comes up with a more illogical name. New renders and hardware shots are circulating.

The leaked but unconfirmed images below, which VGC confirms with a source, look like Nintendo’s console design and include hardware images.

The most noticeable feature is its Nintendo Switch-like appearance. It may not make sense, but I find this surprising and not surprising.

The surprising part is how little it’s changing given Nintendo’s hardware history. Form factors change significantly between generations, from NES to SNES to N64 to GameCube to Wii to Wii U to Switch, plus the parallel handheld path. As a “iPhone upgrade” that barely looks different but may be slimmer, have a bigger screen, etc. It appears that the Switch has some upgrades, like the OLED version.

Unsurprisingly, why would you change it that much given the first Switch’s success? The Switch has sold 143 million units, second only to PS2 and Nintendo DS, and now competing with mobile.

Most players will want a significant power upgrade for their Switch, which this looks to be even though it will still be behind the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Instead, PS4-level graphics are being sought, which makes sense given last generation.
