Haitians “eating dogs”: Trump's racist rumor's beginnings

In an attempt to disparage Kamala Harris’ immigration record, the Republican contender revived racist urban legends on TV that were created and used by the far-right faction in the United States.

This is among the most bizarre moments from the September 10 televised debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The Republican contender remarks, regarding immigrants, to his opponent’s amused looks: “In Springfield, they eat the dogs, they eat the cats, and they devour the pets of the people who live there. It is regrettable that this is what is occurring in our nation.”

Co-host of the debate and journalist David Muir corrects him right away, saying that city authorities claim there is “no credible information” to support Mr. Trump’s claims.

In this instance, Springfield, a symbol of downgraded cities, saw its population drop from 83,000 in 1960 to 60,000 in 2010.

Following the death of its president, Jovenel Moïse, Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas, descends into anarchy. A tenth of a million Haitians leave Port-au-Prince. Some people flee the nation in search of safety in the US, Brazil, or Chile.
