I hate soulslike, I thought

I tried ‘Black Myth Wukong’ after never liking soulslike music and loved it.

It’s not easy, but beginners can play.

Masks off: I dislike soulslike games. Original “Dark Souls,” Bloodborne (which I abandoned due to its difficulty and poor performance), Sekiro, and nothing. I can’t. I ignored “Elden Ring,” “Lies of Pi,” and other games because I didn’t want to spend money on them. I’m addicted to “Black Myth Wukong.”

Why not Souls? I thought playing soulslike games meant getting a Tranquimazin after an hour until a few days ago. ‘Bloodborne’ and ‘Sekiro’ showed me. I say “let’s see, I play to relax and have a bit of a chill, why would I end up smashing the controller against the wall after dying for the fiftieth time ?” Since I play shooters and ‘LoL’, I said, cozy, non-desperate games.

The point was lost on me, and I found it funny. At my brother’s house, he was playing “Elden Ring,” and he crashed repeatedly against the same boss for an afternoon. It seemed absurd and reinforced my idea that I play to relax, not to spend two hours learning the attack pattern of a 20-meter monster that can knock me down.

‘Black Myth Wukong’ followed. I tried my luck since I’m out of games (waiting for “Delta Force” and “Throne and Liberty”). Not liking Steam’s most played single-player game is bad. The reviews were good, and after watching some videos, it seemed more soulslike than other offerings. I bought it, installed it on my PC, and am writing this as redemption.

I like this. I obviously know nothing about Souls. I know Bloodborne’s genre but not its lore, I haven’t played ‘Elden Ring’ or spent a week killing Malenia… The world is new to me, but ‘Black Myth Wukong’ is showing me that I’ve missed out on some amazing sensations.

It may be because its setting is less dark than in other games or because the map, though beautiful, detailed, and visually stunning, is still a corridor. There’s no other way. As someone who hates numbers and loves MMORPGs, I think the statistics system is great. I don’t need a master’s degree to understand the objects, their functions, and how to use them in the game. I like ‘Black Myth Wukong’ better within the genre.

I understand everything now. Call it FOMO, “everyone is freaking out, I want to freak out too”, “I have nothing to play and this doesn’t look bad”, whatever, but I’m hooked on this game. My limited play has taught me that the fun isn’t in dying or being difficult. I’ve probably killed four or five major bosses out of 80. The thrill of victory is fun.

“Come on, dammit!” I don’t know how often I’ve shouted that in recent days. I remember killing the first fat boss, a giant blue-headed monster, after spending the afternoon with him. I died 25 times without issue until I killed him. What a feeling—my hands were shaking.

Strangely, I never got frustrated. I thought I did, but something pushed me to try again differently. More aggressive, passive. I didn’t want the game to overwhelm me. You feel crazy. Naturally, a tougher boss reminds you not to overdo it.

A gateway. No doubt, ‘Black Myth Wukong’ is not the hardest souls game. It’s more like a soulslike hybrid hack-and-slash. If I see ‘Bloodborne‘ again, I’ll cry in a corner, and ‘Elden Ring’ will probably beat me. I’m glad I tried ‘Black Myth Wukong’ because I think it’s a good introduction to the genre.

This genre took me a while to get into, but now I think the best is yet to come.

Several things I wish I had known before playing. First, it’s hard but fun. Do not worry if, like me, you’re afraid of soulslikes. It is, but easily accessible. Second, unless you’ve read ‘Journey to the West’ or are well-versed in Chinese folklore, you won’t understand what’s going on or who’s who or why. This summary or video with lore is highly recommended.
