Best of D23: 'Tron'

Disney fans were treated to some of the house’s biggest releases for the coming months.

After the stunning return of Robert Downey Jr. to Marvel, Disney may have had few surprises in the coming months. Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Fox, and numerous brands and franchises are owned by the world’s largest entertainment company. So D23, the company’s annual event for Disney fans, was expected to have surprises.

One of the first-day conferences advertises upcoming films and TV shows, but D23 is a weekend of talks, presentations, and festivities. These were this initial conference’s best presentations.

Disney still believes in the model, even though the newest live-action remakes of Disney classics haven’t done well financially (or artistically). Although ‘Peter Pan and Wendy’ and ‘Pinocchio‘ went directly to Disney+, this rendition of ‘Snow White’ tries to emulate ‘Beauty and the Beast’, with which it shares aesthetics. It stars Rachel Zegler as the protagonist and Gal Gadot as the shape-shifting witch. Screenwriter and actor strikes delayed the premiere to March 21, a year later.

The third Avatar film is called ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’. This latest installment was not shown at D23, but attendees saw concepts of the Ash Village of the Na’vi, black and drowned in ghostly soot. After “The Sense of Water,” this new film continues the Na’vi-human struggle with the intervention of a new native clan Cameron says is more attracted to power and bloodshed. December 19, 2025, premiere.

Pixar’s latest superhero film stood out among the many announcements (we must capitalize on ‘Inside Out 2”s success). Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first two, returns to complete the trilogy six years after the second sequel, which was the studio’s highest-grossing film. No plot or release date is available, therefore the project is likely in its early stages.

The long-awaited and repeatedly delayed sequel to ‘Tron’ has unveiled fresh photos that only D23 attendees have seen. The big announcement of the night was that Nine Inch Nails will compose the soundtrack, replicating Daft Punk’s for the second film. Along with the always unsettling Jared Leto and the usually trustworthy Jeff Bridges, the teaser highlighted how computer programs become real, a storyline twist that is sure to change the franchise.

A live-action adaptation of Disney’s least-used franchise (despite its protagonist’s ubiquitous marketing) will premiere in summer 2025. Disney has rarely modified its original design, and the CGI Stitch is identical to the sketched one but has more realistic hair.

One of the most anticipated sequels to ‘The Lion King’ has a new trailer. Lin-Manuel Miranda will create all the songs for the film, which opens in theaters on December 20. The next Disney blockbuster will reveal Mufasa and Scar’s origins.

Star Wars was the least discussed Disney franchise at D23, maybe because future series and films will be announced with more hoopla. This December 3, we have a youth-oriented adventure with cuddly animals and charming aliens that sometimes resembles ‘The Goonies’ inspired by the Jedi. Jude Law will enhance a modest product.
